What's A Normal Transmission Temp?

Just curious. Never paid attention before but long trip trailering today and decided to check it in the last 1/4 of the trip! Too bad I didn't look at it before I started. Anyway, it seemed to float between 67 and 74 C.

Mine seems to run about 90 deg above outside temp

75 to 88 C would be about average. That is where mine runs. I notice it more now that I installed the Scangauge II.

My Allison seems to run about 90 degrees (f) above ambient when "working", a little less when running empty. Once when pulling (about 14,000#) and inadvertently not in T/H, it climbed very rapidly. Luckily was in winter (15 degrees f), so didn't overheat, but was up around 160f (145 degrees above ambient).

woulden't the ally be in a different category? seeing as it can overheat idling in drive? your tranny temp will trip warnings if it gets too hot...

Mine normally runs about 160 but on a hot day with a trailer on it will climb 20 degtees pretty quickly when I am going through town or camp. As long as I am moving it stays pretty cool. I have seen it get high enough to match the coolant temp.

did you read the owner's manuel? it says right in it that the allison transmission can overheat from idling in d for long periods of time, the ally has its own transmission overheating message also

Just returned home from a 6000km road trip with the travel trailer, hotest I saw was 87c.

Yes I did, I read both the truck's manual and the Allison's manual and I don't remember reading that. Mine's an '05, don't know if that make's any difference, probably not.

It's interesting that no one's ever complained about that issue in any of these forum's and I'd bet the members collectively have put on ten's of millions of miles.

i am in no means putting the ally down, but it is in my 04's owners manuel under DIC messages...i'm too lazy to go get my manuel and type it in here word for word but it is in there..my guess would be you have have to idle in D for a very long time for it to overheat
