Quiet exhaust under load

Im looking for an exhaust or muffler that will not drone going up hills, I have a 2012 cc with the 4.8l and 4 speed. I want something a little throaty but I don't want my wife to freak out every time I downshift to 3rd. Nice idle and off the line is what I am most into getting a bit more sound. Top end is nice I just dont want much noise below 4k as we live with lots of hills and will be towing.

I am using the long magnaflow with full length tailpipes. I think you will find the 4.8 coupled to the 4 speed is going to always be louder due to the power range of that engine. I put 4.10 gears in mine, it quiets it down a bit, but still is loudish on the downshift due to elevation changes. I also have 2wd, not 4wd. Truck came with 3.23 gears.

yea im leaning towards the corsa, when you say wide open do you mean like floored and high rpm, or like hill climbing? i just really want to know how it sounds on the 4-3 downshift, i dont want my wife on my case every time... did you notice any power gain? im thinking of just doing the muffler because my truck came with the big stainless gmc tip and the exhaust looks to be 2-3/4 anways and very well done from the factory.

I really like my Flowmaster 40 series, but it doesn't sound like what your looking for at all. It has a drone that sounds like what you are not wanting, so I wouldn't recommend it for what you are wanting.

I have a magnaflow muffler welded into my factory pipe, and it sounds awesome. It is very throaty and has ZERO drone. For 175 bucks including muffler, tip and labor to have it installed I could not be happier. But when I get the money after my tires and tune, I am gonna go with the Corsa Sport

From your post I'm not sure you understand what drone is. Just because you hear an exhaust under load doesn't mean it is drone. Drone occurs because certain frequencies resonate at certain RPM's. Usually between 1500 and 2000 RPM's which is at crusing speed or as you accelerate through the gears and hit this RPM range. With exhaust sound you should be able to tell its coming from the rear. With drone it just resonates through out the cab and is louder at these RPM's and even when not under any load.

If you want a little more sound only at idle and above 4000 RPM or only under hard acceleration and not when the engine is under load when towing or pulling a hill I'm not sure you can find anything for what you want. Even when I had my stock exhaust I could hear it when under load towing my 4500 lb boat. I now have the Corsa Touring which is just a little louder than stock and no drone but I can hear it as soon as the engine is under any load. The only time I can't hear it is under very light acceleation. It is not loud except under full throttle but I can still hear it with normal driving . Again, not loud but a nice low rumble and my wife has never mentioned it.

Just look for the longest case muffler you can find and stay away from the "welded" style mufflers like Flowmaster. The baffles inside thos type of mufflers tend to increase in-cab resonance in my experience.

Get yourself a good quality stainless straight through exhaust and you won't have an issue. Stay away from the chambered types.

Just because you can hear the exhaust, it doesn't make it "drone".

Thanks for all the advise. I'm probably going to save up for the corsa. I am probably going to take my chances with my wife's approval. She hates the magnaflow on my cobalt, mind you it's a 4 cyl and drones bad even with a slight touch of the pedal, pretty much anything more then 60 mph on flat land is constant vibrations, gearing down is too. The other examples she's had of exhaust is headers to dual magnaflow xls dumped under the bed and a corvette with burnt out dynomaxes. You can see why she is a little sensitive to exhaust and has "banned it" on this truck. I'm going to bet that with all the soundproofing in the cab all exhaust would be relatively quiet compared to what were used to. I'm thinking I could do a quiet exhaust before she is too accustomed to how it sounds. Is the 30" magnaflow xl a good option? Quiet?

Launch what length of magnaflow? Regular or xl? The long magnaflow mufflers look tempting, cheaper then corsa.

I put a Corsa touring muffler on my 5.3....too quiet actually.. More quiet than stock at idle and at WOT it sounds good and throaty but not as loud as I would like....going up hill is quiet as a mouse. The muffler is actually longer than the stock unit but is straight through.

I wouldn't recommend the Corsa Touring, I've heard it's too quiet often. I'd go with the Corsa Sport or the less expensive dB exhaust which also uses the sport muffler from Corsa. Lower quality stainless but half the price.
