Skid Plates

Well for some reason when I got in from work today I got the urge to look under my truck. So I lay on the garage floor... Looking under my truck, at nothing in particular. I tap on the skip plate (the black one) its plastic?!?!? I paid for a $30,000 truck to get a plastic skid plate? I want my metal one back from the '01 chevy!!

That particular skid plate, the one "in front" of the engine, has been plastic since the mid-'90s (On my '94 it was metal,on my '97 it was plastic,so they changed the material sometime in between)

The ones under the engine and transfer case are metal.

Yeah the front one is plastic. But it was metal on my 2001 Chevy. Why did the switch to plastic in the front?

I don't know, but all the '01s I've ever seen (And I've seen a bunch of them since I work at a GM dealer) the very front one has been plastic.

Like I said, they switched to plastic sometime between '94 and '97 for sure (Like I said I know on my '94,as well as my '93,it was metal, and on my '97,as well as my '99-'04-and current '07 they are plastic)

"I think" starting in '95 they were all plastic but its been so long I can't remember the exact year they switched.

Did you buy your '01 new? The reason I ask is because there were guys "custom making" metal skid plates for the front of the trucks that originally had plastic ones.

Maybe someone bought a custom-made metal one and installed it.

No, I got it used... It was salvaged title too (even though only the front driver side was a little messed up) I guess they could have switched it out in the process of fixing up the truck. I just always thought the were metal to begin with :nono:

Yeah,They must have changed it,Now your skid plate "under" the engine (IE-Oil pan/Frt.differential skid plate) and the one under the transfer case should be metal.

My 99 had plastic up front which I replaced with a metal plate someone on this forum or another put together.

Yep,I thought it was someone on this forum selling those things custom made for the GMT800 trucks.

If I remember correctly you could get them either polished,or unpolished (Or as I would call it "raw")

I guess we finally understand the difference between the Chevy and GMC trucks!!!! :nono:

You better look again Nick,I don't think your very front one is metal,The one underneath is,but not the one in front.

:nono: I guess I could have read the whole thread. When I think "skid plate" I think of the one on the bottom. :)
