285-70/17 Tires On A Stock Height Gmt900?

I'm moving this over to this forum since the Suspension forum attendance seems light.

Thinking of buying some tires for the new truck before the hunting season. I really haven't raised the truck (Bilstein 5100's at the second notch up about 3/4" lift).

Was just thinking about getting either stock size 265-70/17 (31.7 dia x10.7 sec width) or preferably 285-70/17 (32.8 dia x 11.4 sec width, 9.1 tread width). It looks like there is just enough clearance for a 285-70. Anyone have any direct experience?

Thanks

Chuck

they will fit. There is a member that had them on his truck with stock rims and stock height with no issues and he used it offroad alot. I just can't think of his name at the moment. His truck is a gray GMC sierra crewcab and I think he is in canada.

Hey, you won't have any trouble putting a 285 tire on a stock GMT900 truck When I bought my truck I had 285's put on before it left the dealer and had no issues at all.

Only time it MIGHT rub is backing out of a tight driveway and turning full lock. Even that should be minimal (and worth it!).

Thanks guys. I'll go with the 285-70/17. For such a big looking openning in the fender, they sure are tight inside the well when turned. The Cepek FC II in a load range D look promising to me. About as aggressive a tread as I'm willing to go. I would almost buy another set of rims to just run them for the hunt season and put street tires back on the rest of the year, but sh%t a stack of truck tires is a pile I'm not looking forward to storing all year.

Same set up I'm looking at doing on mine as far as tires go. I want something a little bigger, but not huge that I'm going to need a huge lift to accomplish.

The rough country leveling kit is installed Wednesday. Yes, I'll take some before and after's! and I think 07blackz71 set up with the leveling kit/body lift is the direction I'm leaning to lift a little bit more. Don't have all that cash for a good lift, although that would be the ideal set up.

i have the cooper sst 275/65-18 on mine and they scrub on the passenger fender well on full lock and in reverse, but this could be the enormous amount od mud causing the cheap plastic fender wells to sag! i figure if they scrub long enough they will wear a hole wherever it is that they are scrubbing and i will ot have to listen to that racket anymore.

I was about to ask this same question, except for I have GMT800 Z71.

I have a 2006 Z71 that came with same 265/70/17s that some of the 900s come with, do you guys think I will need a lift some kind to clear them. I can probably get a 1/2" or so out of the bars if need be. I am planning on going with an aftermarket 17x8 rim with 4.95 back spacing. The tire I am wanting to use is a 285/70/17 BFG ATKO. This 285 tire 1" taller than stock about 1/4" wider than the stock tires. Not sure what the stock back spacing is on the rims, anyone know?

Let us know for sure. without a leveling kit my source though there would be a problem.

285's fit on the old body style without issue, I have been running them for years on my 2003 Sierra

    • I’m doing an experiment on a vehicle I don’t have much money in. I’m going by the premise that after they last 100K miles they were no mechanical problems with assembly. Or defects with the parts. With oil changes by the minder for the first 127K miles when I acquired it. I quickly went through low mileage oil changes then settled on 5k oil changes with close to 170K miles on the vehicle currently. I did have the option to turn off the cylinder deactivation. I didn’t on this vehicle because in ECONOMY mode at least half the time. It should be a no brainer frequent oil changes are the key. The manufacturer gets away with the long oil changes with its severe service  maintenance. Just ask them what is normal.
    • Even set to "recirculated", the air pushes out and is hot. I have noticed that sometime it doesn't want to switch between recirculated/vented air. Say it is set to Circulated Air and I want to switch to Vented, when I click the Vented button, it just quickly lights up/clicks and immediatly switches back to Circulated. It's done this a few times now. So maybe it is an actuator getting stuck? But then, that doesn't explain the hot air when everything is off does it?
    • I wonder what the price is out at the coast, Big Sur or other out of the way locations as I bet they are charging quite a premium over the in land pumps.
    • Were you looking at the HD trucks on the GM website or the half tons as that makes all the difference. As far as I know there are only two options for the HD trucks and that is the standard 2 speed transfer case or the 2 speed transfer case that has the added 4 high auto feature and they put that transfer case by default into the LTZ and High Country although its optional in the LT and not sure if its available in the work trucks.    The half tons, that is where its been a total mess in my estimation for a few years now with most trucks below the top trim having the single speed transfer case as standard but with the option of having the two speed such as one would get by choosing the Z71 package, however then not being able to get the two speed transfer case with the towing package unless it was a higher trim truck AND had the 6.2 gas so one could combine the towing package gearing diffs with the two speed transfer case. Having said that if its a trail boss package then it gets the two speed transfer case but not necessarily able to get the tow package as it would depend on trim level and engine chosen. Believe me, people have bought the GM half tons assuming "of course it will have a two speed transfer case" only to find out after when they really pay attention to what they now own .... crap, there is NO low range !.    I don't believe Ford or Ram have gone that way yet with their half tons but like I say its been a few years now that GM has done this with the half tons.
