Black Bear Tuning?

Recommended Posts

I have and 08 sierra Vortec Max. What all should I have changed with the tune. I was thinking about getting the TM removed and the AFM removed. What other things should I look for. I was hoping a few of you guys out there has had it done and knows what works best. Please leave opinions. Thanks!

Just choose a good tuner and then tell him how you use the truck and what grade of fuel you will use and they will do the rest. Most guys have the AFM turned off.

+1 I went to the Minnesota BlackBear tune. Justin (with BlackBear) made it very easy. He had the laptop plugged in to the truck, and he took some data.

Then he talked about what I was wanting to do, and made the changes right then and there. If I wanted something changed, he did it. Kinda a "guess and check" type of thing. :(

With mine, he ended up removing most of the TM. He raised the shift points and made it shift firmer. I didn't mess with the AFM, but lots of guys do. :)

Any good, reputable tuner will be able to answer any questions and guide you through the process. Good luck

I know I love my Black Bear tune. I have yet to see anyone who has said it wasn't worth the $250.

I actually didn't notice it that much after the tune. Where I really noticed the quality of the tune was when I sent my tuned computers back to Justin to turn off AFM and had to run the stockers. They really are bad from the factory.

I'm not going to say I didn't notice anything right after he tuned it, because I did notice a big improvement. But a back to back comparison solidified it for me.

I agree with Chris ^

I paid more than the $250 (I bought spare ECM & TCM) and it is still worth the $$$

I haven't noticed any mileage gains, or anything like that, but the drivability has increased 10x. There were several times in town where I'd need to get out of someone's way. I'd give it gas . . . . . . 4 sec later I'd go. 4 sec is a long time when someone is barrelling down on you. :)

Not any more though!

I too opted for the spare computers. I'm in the same boat, haven't seen an increase in milage but the ability to make my truck do what I want is so nice. Love that I'm helping save my tranny by shifting quicker and firmer, love that the delay is gone, everything Justin did makes the truck work like it should.

Same as all of the above. The mpg on the hwy went from 18.5 to almost 23 mpg.

You will be happy you did it.

If you have Black Bear, Justin, do the tune I would say a box of Adult Depends because once he's done you'll shi- yourself! Have fun!!

i am thinking about having this done to my truck. Im not looking to make it a super truck but the shift points would be nice and i am about to put 22's on her so i will need to fix the speedo!! But does this void any factory warranty?

i was considering having this done to mine but was wondering what spare ecm and tcm cost? i do alot of offroad driving in fields, alot of towing but weight is only about 3,000 to 5,000 pounds, and haul an atv that weighs about 800 pounds alot. i would like to tune the truck so that it gets good power and maintains fuel economy. i would like to keep running 87 octane too.

    • You're better read than that Atlas. 😏   British science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke formulated three adages that are known as Clarke's three laws, of which the third law – that "any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic" – is the best known and most widely cited.   Stribeck and the pivotable Hersey Number isn't voodoo nor snake oil. That part is physics. It's what marketing and bean counters do with it that is snake oil and voodoo.    Stribeck is the relationship between Hersey and the Coefficient of Friction. Within the Hersey Equation if viscosity and viscosity is 'Dependent' on.......heat.......and.......viscosity index or the temperature to viscosity slope.    Specifically Hersey is the viscosity AT THE TEMPERATURE IN THAT LOCATION FOR THAT SLOPE.   Hydrodynamic lubrication exist when the film thickness in the location is 3X the Ra roughness of the surface. This is irrespective of the hardness of the substrate. To obtain that thickness X viscosity is required for Y velocity at Z load. That's a lot of moving parts. It is also impossible to maintain in an ICE but nearly possible with a turbine under constant load.    What does that mean? Error heavy and operate light. Wear is inevitable but the rate of wear and the milage obtainable are a function of prevailing conditions and HABITS. The only penalty is viscous drag and at fractions so low as to be well worth the effort. Double the life, half the manufacturing carbon foot print. Greed is the only impediment.    The materials generated by SwRI are the RESULT not an estimation or a hypothesis.    Don't delude yourself sir, EV's have as many pitfalls as ICE's. We just don't know what they are yet and it will take longer to sort as MARKETING and GREEDY CEO's have had more time to polish the turd they are selling.
    • You can always count on greed to prey on ignorance and stupidity.    Friend bought a 2019 Ford Flex and asked me about using Valvoline R&P 5W30 in it. Told him give the miles on it and the fact it wasn't yet using oil that it was a good plan. He uses a Valvoline quick change shop for his oil service.   First they tell him that isn't the oil the OEM recommends. He told them he didn't care what the OEM thought. Then they floated the, "But it will void your warranty"    His reply was it's a 2019, there is no warranty and informed them their knowledge of the law was lacking.    Then they tell him 'But it will ruin your motor"!.    Mine to ruin he says. Finally they give in and charge him 150% the semi-syn price    Point it the brainwash is so embedded that even the service industry is drunk on their swill. The public is right behind them. Echoing the same lies on every forum and media platform. If the end goal is indeed EV then I'd say that ship is about built.
    • Diesel hit $6.00 here today at the truck stop.   Payed $2.79 for E85 today too.
