Anyone Have Funny Wear On Stock Goodyear Wanger At/s Tires?

I noticed my tires wearing strange on my 08 1500 truck. It has the Goodyear Wanger AT/S P265-70/17 tires. The inside and outside outer edges of both front tires is wearing heavily. The truck was recently aligned by the best shop in town (very trustworthy over the 30+ yrs I've used them) after I had the Bilsteins installed.

Anyone have similar problems with these tires?

Thanks

Chuck.

I don't have the same stock tires as you but I mine wear heavy on the edge, I always make sure the tires are at 35psi. The dealer had to do an alignment after they did a tire rotation my last oil change. The truck was pulling hard, the alignment corrected the pull but the edges seem to wear still. I almost think it has to do with driving style but not sure. My front tires have only been on the front for 3500 miles and the outer edge is smooth but at the same time the back tires have only been my back tires for the same 3500 and one of them is almost bald and the other one has slight wear on the edge. Maybe my tires came from the reject bin. if the camera is charged I will get pictures for you when I get home.

Thanks Greg.

I knew someone would mention tire pressure. Some of the guys are pushing low pressures for ride quality. I'm not a believer in low pressures. I run pressures that give the performance I'm after. That means handling and tread wear. I've had 40 psi in the fronts since it was new (about 18,000 miles now).

When I was in Oregon a few days ago, I saw they were wearing heavily on the outside edges, both inside and out and both tires the same. So, I pumped them up to the max rated pressure for these silly car tires they put on at the factory, 44 psi. Still, on the way back from Oregon, the wear is continuing on the outside edges.

I suspect my problem is due to GM's use of a "P" rated car tire on a truck that probably weighs in excess of 5000 lbs. I'm going to put at least a Load Range "D" tire on it soon. But, I want to make sure it's not a mechanical problem first. That's the reason for my inquiry with others.

I run 40 PSI, which is still higher than GM's recommendation, the front tires are what I would say cupping on the edges really bad, I attribute it to the fact that Goodyears are only good for tire swings.

Those are the OEM tires I had until one blew out on the hiway. Only had 30K on them, but they were noisy and seemed to vibrate a bit. Get rid of them. They aren't safe.

I think the issue is not so much the brand as the Load Range. "P" tires are for cars. Trucks this heavy require a more substantial carcass like a LT (light truck) tire provides. A Load Range "C" is about the lowest I've seen of the LT tires. But, I'm a follower of D and E tires.

I hope I never have to go back to load range E. I had them on my 3/4 cummins with the solid axle up front. I still have loose filings because of that. I do know they would ride better on the chevy for sho. Oh I got 75,000 on the loadrange E BFG.

My 99 2500 GMC has LR E tires and rides better than my 08 1500. Both have independent front suspension. No loose fillings. Got about 65,000 out of three sets of Firestone LR E tires. Never aligned it and seldom rotated.

Cant say anything on the new truck. Only has 2100 miles. But my 07 didnt have any issues while I had it. I always kept btw 35-40 psi and there were no problems. I do have the same tiers BTW.

Good luck with those tires, Geoffrey. I don't beleive I have an alignment problem. Your ECSB ought to be similar weight as my crewcab. Keep an eye on them. Mine didn't show much until very recently (now about 18,000 miles).

My tires only have 8500 miles on them and if I had to get an inspection on the truck they wouldn't pass. I think my OE tires are General Tire AmeriTrac 245/70R-17. TireRack

Greg,

Those tires are pretty light duty. I'm going to a heavy duty tire. For my needs, a LR "D" or "E" is what I'm going to get. Do they ride rougher? Sure. But, I'll bet a set of 70 series LR "D" or "E" tires ride better than a 60 series "C".

".... those silly little passenger car tires they put on trucks ....."

yup.. that is your problem.... if you are running 265/70/17's then get a good aftermarket 'truck' tire like a LT265/70/17 Load Range D (8-ply) or Load Range E (10-ply) ... we could start a long string of arguing over which brand, but my favourite is definitely TOYO OPEN COUNTRY A/T .... you won't be dissappointed.. these tires have a stiffer ride and stiffer support so they are not trying to roll sideways on every corner and are stable when travelling down the road.... there are many good brand/line of truck tires out there, my advice is to stay away from the ones that are the major OEM installations.
