Max Tire Size On A18x8 Inch Wheel?

Recommended Posts

I'm new to the board and own a 2008 GMC SIERRA ALL TERRAIN EDITION extended cab shortbed. I am about to order the rough country 3 inch lift and will upgrade tires as well. The kit says that the recomended tire size is a 285/65/18. But I was wanting something maybe just a little larger. The wheels are 18x8 inches. Can I fit a bigger tire on those wheels? Any help would be great.

You can definitely fit MUCH bigger tires on those wheels. However you will have serious rubbing issues if you go with a bigger size than what Rough Country recommends for that specific lift.

If you go to the tire manufacturer's website or Tire Rack .com you can read the specs for various tires and their rim width recommendations.

It really woulnt bother me if they rubbed a little. There isn't many times my wheels are at hard lock. Any ideas on what size I could get away with? Is there something that measures just under a 35 but would still be taller and wider than the 285/65/18? If I had to do slight trimming of some plastic, that would be ok too. Do they make a wheel spacer to make them stick out just a bit and maybe not rub as much? Sorry I am new to all this.

I got on tire rack and looked up the tire I would like to go with (bf goodwrench AT) and rough country says to go with a 285/65/18 and it measures 11.5 inches wide and 32.8 inches tall. After seeing a truck in person with a level lift and the 285s, I would like something a little bigger. The BFG AT in a 305/65/18 measures 12.2 wide and 33.7 tall. How much of an issue would it be to put that on the stock 8 inch rim? And what about rubbing?

Go for the 305 for sure. Will barely rub if at all. Dont worry about the width. We have a 08 duramax and 08 powerstroke both with 325/65/18 on a 8.5 rim and have never had a problem.

If i could go back in time I would have gotton 305/65/18 instead of my 285/65/18.

I think I will stay away from the body lift. I do think they look better on the new trucks but still not the way I want mine to look.

TDYE522,

Check this website out http://www.dakota-truck.net/TIRECALC/tirecalc.html .

You can play around with different tire size and compare the width and hieght difference to what Rough Country is recommending.

I spent about a month looking around for the wheel/tire size for my truck. I ended up going with 285/70/17 and I think it fits my truck perfect, but then again these are 17" wheels with a 2.5" front level kit.

Good Luck

First off, a body lift would be a much safer bet than installing such a poorly designed glorified leveling kit on your nice truck. The RC 3" kit was on my truck for less than two months, before the ball joints went bad (Search for more details). I would also recommend something smaller than a 305/65. I ran 305/55/20's on my truck with a 3" body lift and 2" leveling kit and I rubbed slightly (I wasn't willing to trim).

    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
    • Those can be high, as well as the big California cities. The ones that will pop your eyes out are the 395 corridor on the Eastern side of the Sierra Nevadas. Lee Vining, $7.19 for regular and $8.89 for diesel is what the Google said right now.
    • Correct.  2019-2021 model years are serviced by a different p/n.  19420611.  Recall 2021s use 19420611.   The recall engines 2022-2024 model years are serviced with 12740076.     The difference between 19420611 and 12740076 is GM changed injector size for 2022.  The injectors are smaller on 12740076 with smaller injector bores in the cylinder heads to match the smaller injectors.  So you can't install a 19420611 in a 2022-2024, and you can't install a 12740076 in a 2019-2021.     Both engines are the replacement engine p/ns that are in the L87 recall.  So both of these are the updated engines.     Here's a version of the L87 recall with the p/ns for all the parts needed.    RCRIT-25V274-7075.pdf   Note it shows 19420611 and 12740076 with an asterisk to a footnote "Use the VIN and the GM Electronic Parts Catalog (EPC) to determine which part to order if two or more part numbers are listed for the same part, as it may vary by vehicle options."
