2001 Silverado, 1500HD, 6.0L Vortec, 94,000 Miles.

The only modification under the hood is a K&N Air Replacement filter.

---------------------------------

I've posted this problem before but with no luck following the solutions, now that I've dug deeper into the problem, here it is again with some updates.

---------------------------------

The truck starts hard. The easiest way to get it to fire is to flip the key on.. wait for the lights to go out, turn it over 2-3 seconds, flip the key off. Flip the key back on, wait for the lights to go out, and it generally will always fire once you hit the key the second, maybe 3rd time. Sometimes it starts right up like you'd never know there was an issue, sometimes it spits n sputters for a few sections. The truck runs like a top once you get it started.

It's been to 3 dealerships, no one can seem to find anything wrong with it.

-Doesn't throw any trouble codes

-Battery Replaced (Old one tested weak anyway)

-New Fuel Filter (Was due for replacement anyway)

-New Fuel Pressure Regulator (Shot in the dark, no positive results)

-Inspected/cleaned EGR Valve, looked good, nothing obvious..

-Inspected and cleaned PCV Valve, looked good, nothing obvious..

-Checked O2 Sensor connections

I think that's about the extent of it. Few more thousand miles and I'm doing a 100,000 mile service which will include the following items..

Shocks

Spark Plugs/Wires/etc

Radiator Flush/Refill

Change Transfer Case fluid

New o2 Sensor?

Reinspect EGR

Rotate Tires

Lube Shift Linkage

Inspect/Clean Brakes

Inspect Ball Joints

Purge Valve (What the hell is that?)

Oil Change

If anyone has any suggestions I would greatly appreciate it.

Thanks in advance!

Jon

I agree on the fuel pump comment..... check the fuel pressure

.. what you describe is exactly what my 97 5.7L Vortec did... until one day I got so frustrated I dropped it off at the mechanic shop on the way to work and they diagnosed poor fuel pressure

.. new fuel pump and it now starts and runs great.... be sure to get an ACDelco pump from a dealer or a Delphi pump from NAPA or similar good parts store..... apparently Airtex and Carter fuel pumps are not as reliable for long term service..

+1 on the fuel pressure and or possible pump failing.

As for the Airtex, I've had no problems. Its been going strong for about 4 years now.

Sounds like the check valve in your fuel pump is no good. Do a pressure and leak down test of the pump.It sounds like when you shut the key off the pressure is not holding and you need to "reprime" the system with each start.

I've got an 03 Silverado crew cab 4x4 with the 6.0L engine with 263,*** miles on it and I just changed out my fuel pump this weekend because of the exact issue you were having. I to changed the fuel filter, fuel pressure regulator and still had the starting issue then asked a mechanic friend and he to mentioned just like (59ih340) mentioned that the check valve tend to fail on theses pumps and causes the start up issue just like you described. New fuel pump and now it starts right up on the first crank. Good luck.
