2007 Tahoe Problem

Question

Posted

Wife's 2007 TAHOE; not 4x4; never towed; synthetics from nose to tail. Rear differential has OEM fluids; not changed to date.

"Growl" began 2 weeks ago @ right rear wheel area. Inspected to check for foreign body in brakes or whatever; found nothing. "Growl" can be heard by hand turning hub. Rear differential plug shows "shavings/particles."

Two questions please:

1. I've checked for recalls/campaigns on online; found none. Yup, the vehicle is @ 50K+, so out of warranty.

2. "At the feed store", a fella told me that he thought the bearing was a sealed deal in the hub; that I'd hafta replace the whole rear wheel hub. Fact? Is this a major $$$ item? The axle is solid; not independent suspension.

All the best, from Alabama.

The axle lubricate the bearings by diff lube being pushed out to the wheel bearings. If it's the wheel bearing, it's just a matter of pulling the axle and replacing the bearing.

Have you checked the other side? Do you any abnormal noise at the diff itself? I'd pull the cover for a thorough inspection.

Thanks for the fast replies, Fellas.

I'll check with my local dealer to see if any open recalls/campaigns might be out there.

I'll pull the diff cover, check both sides, and then fix what's not right.

Robert (gmtech4), thanks for the info that I don't have a hub; that's it is a bearing there. I agree not to just fling new parts without having it all checked out first.
