springfield Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 Hello all! I've been gone from the GM truck scene for awhile..... but I just bought a Suburban 2500 with the 8.1L. I just dropped the trans. pan and changed the filter. Does any one know what the capacity of the trans. system is? Also, what is the general amount of fluid required when you just drop the pan and replace the filter? I also assume it does not have a torque converter drain. It does have the factory trans. cooler. Also, it is the 4L85E. Thanks in advance for your help!
Stevens03 Posted January 20, 2010 Posted January 20, 2010 11 or 12 quarts to fill it from empty including the torque converter. By dropping the pan, your only getting about 5-6 quarts. And since you have the 8.1L, I believe your right about the 4L85E trans. Look for MN8 rpo code in the glove box for the 4L85e identification. It's a beefed up version of the 4L80e trans.

Thanks for the reply. I figured that dropping the pan was good for replacing half the fluid at best. I wanted to know the total volume because I was planning on adding Lube Guard during the refill. Thanks again!
