Just thinking about whether it is smarter to drive in "3" instead of "D" say up to about 40 mph. Wouldnt it keep the tranny cooler since its not shifting in and out of overdrive and the TC isnt locking up?

you have a 96 truck....its lasted this long...and probably been driven in D all its life....why start driving in 3 now.

Im the second owner, I bought it last year. Its just for discussion purposes I mean its not gunna do any harm right. Maybe just some lower mpg if your going at higher speeds with it in 3.

nope wont do any harm...I don't think it will last any longer though...well the 3-4 clutch pack would, it would almost never be used. But if the trans is going brake....its gonna be the sunshell, or the planetary set if your towing.

Once I hit about 30-35mph though, my truck pretty much stays in 4th and doesn't shift down, unless I want it to.

TC locks up in 3rd as well ,it does not matter but you have engine braking in manual 3rd ,so more stuff is "on"while your helping the tranny ,my GM blue bible book is not here to refer to.

3rd is for towing ,thats it ,no need to do the manual 3rd thing at all

my 2 cents
