98 Sierra Egr Valve Problem

Check engine light is on and my truck runs rough when I give it 1/4 throttle. Had a diognosis and it points to the egr valve which was replaced in July about 9000 miles ago. One mechanic said to have it replaced. Another mechanic wants to remove the intake manifold and clean out all of the carbon. He said that some carbon must be getting caught in the egr valve. It has since been cleaned twice. Once by a certified mechanic and once by me and I'm still having the same problem. Any other ideas, suggestions, or theories would be appreciated.

I actually never asked the mechanic. I'll have to look on the receipt.

What kind of exhaust are you running? I was told that not enough back preassure will cause the EGR to not work.

The code was P0404. As for the exhaust, cat back with a single flow master.
