A.c Compressor Issues

My friend has an a/c compresser on his vehicle that at times when the clutch cuts in the whole vehicle vibrates and it is quite noisy while it is engaged, it does not do it every time though. Any ideas as to what the issue may be?

Could just be low on refrigerant, has he checked it?

I did not realize that low R134 could cause symptoms like that, I'll have to ask him is the a/c is cold enough. I thought that if the refrigerant was low it would just cause the compressor to cut in and out more frequent. It may be hard for him to get an accurate test on the a/c as it is quite cold here and it may not function properly to start with or will the cold not affect howthe a/c would run? I don't think he has had it checked out, he was thinking it was bearings going or something.

It does cause the compressor to cut in and out more often, but it can also cause an increase in noise -- that's why some R134 you can buy has an additive in it to help lube the compressor, like this:

Only way to know is to hook some gauges up....... Low refrigerant possibly. If you hook the gauges up and the needles try to touch in the center she's dead..... ( i.e. ---> <---)

I took a listen to his vehicle and the vibration has nothing to do with the a/c clutch. All runs fine until the coolant fan cuts in on the rad then that is when the vehicle shakes. I pulled the fan fuse from under the hood to kill the fan and the vibration went away, popped the fuse back in and the vibration was back. As soon as we drove it one block and the fan cut out, the vibration went away. Would it just need a new coolant fan motor or is there some type of flash progrmaing that could send the fan back in sync?????? I assume the motor on the coolant fan has some bad bearings or something.

Is it a clutch fan or is it running electric fans? That almost sounds more like a bad fan clutch to me, honestly. That isn't entirely uncommon to see....
