Loud Mettalic Clank

Hey guys, was wondering if anyone has this problem before.... after driving for a while and stopping at a stop light or shutting down the engine I hear a loud metallic clank coming from the passenger side of the engine compartment. It does not seem to matter if I have had the AC on or not. This noise usually occurs after sitting still for about a minute. My truck only recently started making this sound. The truck has almost 74000 miles, a 5.3L V8 with after market headers exhaust and intake kit. Any help that you can provide would be greatly appreciated since I just went out of warranty. By the way, headers, exhaust and intake havebeen on the truck almost three years now.

Is there anyone that can post service Bulletin #030861002e? I would like to see if that has anything to with this problem... it now occurs while driving down the road ad can be felt in the floor boards. I have checked all of the heat shields and they are tight. This is getting worse.

I did have a complaint about 6 months ago that Chevy fixed... sounded like my right front tire assembly (meaning tire, coil springs, shock and control arms) was going to fall off of the truck. After a few days of troubleshooting the problem was fixed. When I asked what it was the service manager said "I have no idea... we just started taking your front end apart and put it back together."

Vehicle is now out of warranty but I will go back to them to have this problem looked at... although it will of course cost some outrageous amount of money because it will be found un-related to the original problem.

Only other thing i can think of is maybe the Catalytic converter on that side is going bad. Any suggestions you may have would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for your time.

I would put my money on the heat shields (from the temperature increase/decrease). My last few vehicles have done this after stopping. Is a metal pinging noise?

Yes it is. It happens while driving down the road, stopped at stop lights and after turning off the engine. My son claims he can feel it in the floor board on the passenger side... sounds like if is coming from the engine compartment area on the passenger side... a pistol shot would be a more accurate description of the sound.

Sounds a bit rough for just a heat shield. Have a dealership at least rule out the cats - they are under a longer-term warranty.

Maybe a Ford that got sucked up the tailpipe trying to get back out. :D

Maybe...

Going to take it in to the dealer tomorrow and let them look at it. Maybe it is something that wont cost me an arm, leg and my first born.

After much anguish and gnashing of teeth, the problem appears to have been resolved. In this instance could have been any of several thing wrong... flange bolts on y-pipe loose and the crossmember bolts checked. thanks for all of your ideas.
