Normal Op Temp For Tranny Fluid In 09 2500hd Dmax

I have a 2009 2500HD dmax, which runs like a Swiss watch! I love it!

 

I've been all through both owners' manuals; the regular one and the diesel supplement. If the answer to my question is in there, I've missed it.

 

Under "normal" conditions [whatever "normal" means] about what is the range of OK temperatures for tranny fluid?

 

Now, if I'm towing our 8,000 lb travel trailer, what would the answer be?

 

I don't suspect I have problems; I'm simply curious. I used to have the 2002 version of the same truck and it had a traditional gauge on the dash, with a red line, so I knew sort of when I was getting too hot. With the message I can cycle through on the dashboard message board, all I get is the temperature. I have no indication from the message board whether I'm ok or not.

Anywhere between 100 - 150ish.

my good buddy is a real duramax enthusiast, running about 500hp on a stock turbo...he knows what hes talkin about. says the allison should hover close to 140 F

If you have the DIC, you can set it to display the temp digitally. Mine runs about 120-140. Still haven't towed with my 09 yet. The other Allisons (both slightly modified 2006 CrewCabs) I use frequently for towing never went over 180 with 10-14,000lbs and 90F ambient temps and lots of freeway driving through the mountains.

I saw 174 idling for 2 hours at the Mexico border. Otherwise, what everyone else said.

Rule of thumb is 100 degrees higher than ambient air when under load. Less when running empty.

That seems about right. I've seen mine at about 190 a few times. Have not reached 200 yet, but would not be surprised if it does go over at some point. Solo it is very cool. Probably sits around 140-170 so towing in the summer, AC running. My TT is a bit over 8,300lbs.

 

Also, time of year and road conditions have a big impact on temp. Climbing on a hot day is very different from driving on flat east coast roads in April.
