Aux Input On The Back Of The Factory Deck

Recommended Posts

Hello,

I was hoping someone could tell me definitively whether or not the stock factory deck already had a build in RCA input on the back of it. Reason being is I want to have a 3.5mm headphone to RCA (red&white) cable installed so I can plug in my Ipod and listen to that using the aux input method.

That being said, I have a 2004 silverado, stock everything, bose, 6-disk changer, on star, the whole works. But the guy I spoke with to install this cable said that he was not aware that these stock HU's had a RCA input on them, said I would need some sort of adapter.

I have the steering wheel controls and dont want to lose any of that functionality, and dont want to have to go through the hassle and expense of installing one of those aftermarket programmer dealies.

Can someone please chime in and tell me if the stock HU does have an RCA input on the back. Dude said he would only charge $25 to install the cable which is right up my price range.

Your help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

John

I have a deck of which you speak that I got for my dad's 03. I definately don't remember seeing an aux in on the back......99.9% sure that it won't. Its pretty simple to remove it and look for yourself. I think 07 was the first year that had the 3.5mm, but don't recall any having RCA's.

Cool, I appreciate your reply. I guess I should have known that I would not be that lucky. I just dont want to have to rip out the dash, that why I was gonna have this other guy do it.

It's wierd though that when your scroll through the sources using the wheel buttons that there is an aux...why have the option of there is no aux input?

You don't to pay someone to open your dash, its really easy.

1) turn truck to on, shift down to 1

2) pull off the face peice thats held on with really weak clips and disconnect the plugs if you have any.

I was an installer for many years and the GMT 800s made our lives easy since they took under 30 seconds to get the radio out.

Does the $25.00 include the cable? On my 2000 the deck has a unused plugin (not jacks) on the back. The deck was very easy to remove. The cheapest ive seen the harness for was 59.00 US plus shipping. For me in Canada I could get a better sounding aftermarket deck with the jacks for damn near the same price. 59.00 US plus exchange rate +shipping ($10 to $20) +taxes and possibly duties or custom charges.

AUX doesn't just mean RCA jacks. It means Auxillary. Point being - some of those trucks had a factory 6 (or was it 12?) disk CD changer that the AUX input was used for.

It was a 6 disc. I didn't have one, so when I installed the iSimple iPod adapter everything was gravy. It was like $95 and I chose to do the install myself. All it required was unplugging the factory radio, plugging this into the unused spot on the radio, and running power to the unit. Everything is hidden and the only way you'd ever know was because there is a cable coming out of the dash to plug the iPod into. It charges the iPod and also allows you to still use the factory radio and steering wheel buttons to scroll through songs. Another added bonus is the RCA inputs on the unit as well. If you choose, you can run the iPod cord out, and also use the cord the OP was talking about and run it out as well and hook up anything that has a headphone jack. I had never taken out a car radio before this (I'm pretty confident in my mechanical abilities) and it took me maybe a half hour to install. I highly recommend it.

WOW, so it reall was a 30 second take off. I am so used to having to rip the whole damn dash apart to get the the factory HU, this was a piece of cake. On a sadder note I saw for myself it is true there in no aux RCA's in the back of the HU =(

I guess I am going to have to check out the isimple. I really like the steering wheel controls. I know some people dont care but this is my first set of wheel controls and I like them. =)

If you can solder two wires together, there are quite a few sites on the old interweb showing how to tap into the internals of the HU and solder in a 3.5mm AUX jack.

I got a kit from crutchfield that uses a 3.5mm jack to RCA cables, it plugs into the back of the stock head unit. We use it for sirius and my wifes ipod. Works great.

So on a 04 stock HU there is an AUX port on the back of the unit that one can plug a 3.5mm cable into to run an Ipod correct??
