Underhood Dirt And Crap!

Recommended Posts

I changed the oil and filter, and greased the tierod ends today, and wasn't very happy when I saw the crap that blows all over all that black plastic stuff under the hood. There's abig gap that lets dirty water just blow in onto everything. Anybody else have this problem? Thinking about a deflector or gasket to make it stop. Never had this issue with any other vehicle, car or truck! (GMT900)

are you talking in the wheel wells? because all trucks have that problem...you could clean the motor but its touchy and if your not careful can ruin alot of stuff, i washed mine and i won't do it again unless its by hand, back in the day it was easy to cover the dizzy and intake and spray away, not theres 8 coils and electronics galore...

I mean under the hood. The gap is at the front above the grille.

The main issue with cleaning under the hood, especially with an engine cleanner, is the risk of causing the pulleys and belt to squeak. For some reason after you clean the engine the squeaks begin. I guess that is where they got the phrase "squeaky clean"

I clean under my hood a few times per year. Agreed that for some whatever reason, an engine degreaser does cause my belts to squeak for a few days. Maybe I'm just not careful enough with where I spray it. But since switching to Simple Green as the cleaning agent, I haven't had any issues...

I usually just clean mine by hand with some cleaner and a rag as I'm afraid to start spraying water under there for fear of shorting something out. :(

No Touch tire foam. Trust me. It works well on dirt and you do not have to rinse. Grease needs something tougher but if you keep up with the dirt, the engine compartment will look factory new all the time.

Here's the fix. I used expanding gasket (1 inch) for steel roofing from a lumber yard. So far, it's great, but I haven't driven in real crud since the install.

I must be nuts, I clean under the hood about once a month. Rag, old tooth brush. I even take the grille off and clean in there. It might only take a few hours but I know right away if anything is leaking, I am small enough I can stand on the front cross member between the engine and electric fans and clean everything up real nice.
