1990 Gauges Upgrade?

Is there another year of gauges that I could upgrade to, better looking or a regular gauge face??

You could always buy the inlays that go over the face. Of course you will need to tear into your dash and pull the plastic face off. I have not done this on a GM, but helped my son on a few of his hot-rod ricers...

I have read about this on another chevy truck forum ... and in order to get a different set of gauges into your truck you are looking at replacing the entire dash ... and you are looking at a lot of trouble to hack and splice into wiring harnesses to try to make the conversion work... it's been done, but not without lots of grief...

I realize a 95+ cluster would't fit into a pre 95 truck. But I've often thought about putting a 94 gauge cluster into my 89. Its a much nicer looking package. I'd have to hook up the tach but would this not fit in without altering the whole dash?

Mr. Tim, don't hold me to this, but I'm fairly certain that you can swap the cluster up to a 1995 into your truck?

 

I say this, but it would REALLY help to see the rear of your existing cluster. I swapped out the instrument cluster in my 1992 Silverado just a couple years after I got it simply because I wanted a TACH and mine didn't come with one. I never could figure out why mine didn't have one and just thought it looked better in a customised truck. Naturally, I wanted it to go faster too and EVERYBODY knows a TACH does that. LOL!

 

Now, I already had the next year style 'needle' gauges from the ones you have (the sweeping arch type, right?) and mine was a VERY simple plug and play. The TACH worked perfectly even though I didn't have one originally and the only thing I did was change out the odometer from my original cluster to the new one with the TACH, so that my miles wouldn't be off. Simple matter of a couple screws holding it in.

My '91 has the disks instead of needles and that cluster has a different plug on the back than the needle type, The tripometer reset is located in a different place and is round instead of square too.

 

That said, I replaced my dash board and used the cluster that was in the replacement dash. While everything worked fine there was one problem that showed up and it was that the odd right front turn signal and side marker would be on all the time. I put my old cluster back in and no more problem. Could be a defect in the replacement cluster but can't say for sure, just be aware that swapping parts from truck to truck or year to year is no guarantee even if they look nearly identical.

Any 91 tach dash will work. The needle guages debuted in 1991 but had the same plug in the rear as the old moonies did. 92-94 uses a DRAC and has a different dash connector. The swap involves moving 3 wires in your harness and adding the tach reference wire.

That is more work but gives you the more common 92-94 cluster.
