Stock Rims Look Like Crap

I did a big clean on my truck last night and what I thought was road grime stuck on my rims is actually something eating the finish and making them look like crap.

 

Has anyone seen ANYTHING about this. I need to do something..

I dunno, I thought it was dog piss, but my dog got broke from pissing on tires a long time ago, so its only the occasional dog. Basically, under the balancing weights, its rotting the finish away.

Where do you live? I know her in MN where the weights are on the clear coated wheels, the balancing weight cuts into the finish enough, salt gets in there, and corrodes under the clear. See that alot. My 03 is starting to do it some on my factory wheels. On my new wheels i bought i took them to my tire guy and he said this particular wheel he thought he could balance it with the weights on the inside...so in the future might want to try that if you can.

Yeah, mine started pitting around the hub. Dealer gave me a choice (new wheels or refinish)

 

I chose the refinish, as the new ones would probably start the same garbage.

 

SO far, so good. There have been MANY complaints regarding finish on MANY GM wheels as of late.

Very common issue. I need to go get the wheel weights replaced on my All Terrain soon as well since a couple of them have started rusting and probably will start to destroy the finish on them too.

yeah its at my wheel weights as well. i live near no snow. in georgia we dont use road salt so this isnt the issue. looks like hell.

My truck is an 09 and even after one northern ontario winter they are starting to show pits, my parents have an 07 yukon denali and it came with the crome 20's and they started to pit and rust after one winter, so my parents brought it back to the dealer and they ordered them a new set, werent to excited about doing it but they did, was like a 6000 dollar warranty job. those GM rims are very over priced. What we found works the best is a thin layer of vaseline. it doesnt look the greatest cause everything starts to stick to it, but it sure saves the rims, dish soap washes it of easily, so if it gets to dirty wash it off and apply again. Wouldn't have to bother wasting all this time and effort if they just put a thick clear coat on them IMO.

Do it...this is what i had them do on my AT wheels...so they will for sure balance up on yours

You mean the stick on weights instead of the clamp on? If so that's good to know!

I always get the stick on weights that mount on the inside of the wheel. I've had too many wheels damaged by those stupid clamp on weights. It doesn't cost extra either. Just tell them you want the stick on weights that go on the inside. The dealership uses them and so does Wal-Mart automotive centers.

This is a very common problem. I had mine replace 2 times already and my 3rd set is starting to do it. Also I always used the stick on weights and I still had the problem.

It's not happening around the weights, but at random areas on the wheels of my wife's '08 G5.

I don't know about that. But my tire guy took the factory clamp on ones off the outside and and put them on the inside of the wheel, so you won't see them and also so it won't hurt the finish over time. Figured that would be best to do that right way before i started driving with them on.
