285/70/17 Vs. 33x12.50x17 Whats The Difference?

Well just as the title says... whats the difference? Was looking on anther form and guy was looking at some MTZ's. I love the tread pattern on them and they are in my lists of tires I'm looking at getting. Now they come in a 285/70/17 at $256 a tire. Then a 33x12.50x17 was like $226 a tire. Why the price difference? Whats the difference in sizes between the two? Is one shorter than the other?

Well that answers that... Now my question is... Will the 33x12.50x17 rub, since its wider, with stock wheels?

if you're not willing to trim at all, stick with the 285/70/17s.... its very likely that you'll have rubbing issues with a 33x12.5 even on stock wheels with just a leveling kit

Would it be trimming metal or just a little plastic you think?

 

And would I have to trim for a 295/70/17 as well?

every trucks a little different... with 33x12.5 id say that trimming metal is likely, with the 295s you may get away with minor plastic trimming and with 285s you should be OK.

 

it all depends on how much rubbing you're willing to put up with. some people dont care if their tire rubs when they're turning and pulling into a driveway... personally, any rubbing at all / at any time is unacceptable in my book (i dont care how cool the truck looks in pics on the internet, nothing is more lame than seeing a nice truck and as the guy pulls out of a parking spot you hear that god awfull tire rubbing sound)

Couldn't have said it better myself Matt! Unlike most people I actually use my truck off road so any rubbing turns into MAJOR rubbing when you hit a rut or tree root or anything. Thanks for your help I think you may have made my tire choice for me haha

You could always put a 1.5” BL on. It seems pretty popular here and as soon as I can talk the wife into it and find a place to install one I’m going to go that route.

add a 3" body to that leveling kit and you can run some 305/55/20s =)

Yeah I've thought about the 1.5" body lift but it's not in the budget for the summer. I'm probably going to stick to some 285/70/17 MTZ's... I think it will look sharp. And Mickey's seem to stay pretty true to size
