Brake Problems

A few days ago I posted about a problem I was having on my 08 Silverado. I took it to my local dealer today (Glendora CHEVY, in So Cal) and mentioned the problem to them. They looked up the truck and found a bulletin on these trucks (bulletin 10-05-23-001) for brake squeak.

 

The service tech walks out tells me that he is going to check my pad's and rotors, he tells me that they were in the bulletin and he lets me stand in the service bay as he INSTALLS NEW ROTORS AND PADS.....all the time picking he's brain about my truck. From the time I pulled into service till the time i left was less than 1 hr.

 

Just FYI, have your brakes checked.

Models: 2008 Chevrolet Silverado Light Duty (LD)

 

2008 GMC Sierra Light Duty (LD)

 

2nd-Design Only - w/ Pad Spreading Spring Clips (Refer to PIT4611 for Design Identification)

 

Equipped with Disc/Drum Brakes (RPO JF3) and Stabilitrak (RPO JL4)

 

2009-2010 Chevrolet Silverado Light Duty (LD)

 

2009-2010 GMC Sierra Light Duty (LD)

Condition

Some customers may comment on a pulsation or vibration mostly concentrated in the steering wheel during downhill descent as specifically described. This condition will most often begin as an increasing rumbling noise coming from the underbody or the front of the vehicle. This condition is exhibited mostly in mountainous regions.

 

Note: Use care to ensure the following diagnosis and repair are only attempted if the conditions and concern match those listed, and if the concern can be duplicated under the same conditions.

 

This condition occurs ONLY under the following conditions:

• When the vehicle is driven as follows:

 

• On a downhill descent on fairly steep grade (roughly 5% or greater)

 

• On larger hills (roughly 1.5 km [1 mi] road length or greater), without sharp turns

 

• At speed limits above 64 km/h (40 mph)

 

• Using the brakes just enough to maintain the speed limit moving downhill.

 

• Typically, a rumbling noise will be heard first, building in intensity, followed by increasing pulsation, or vibration, felt in the steering wheel, then typically felt in the floor panel.

 

• The condition will be eliminated once the vehicle is driven on relatively flat ground, typically for 1.5-3 km (1-2 mi).

 

Cause:

This condition may be caused by interaction between the front brake lining material and the front brake rotors.

 

Correction:

Important: Do not attempt any repairs on the vehicle until you verify the specific condition is present by following the steps below:

 

Warm up the vehicle by driving approximately 8 km (5 mi).

Drive the vehicle in the lane closest to the side of the fairly steep grade (roughly 5 percent or greater), larger hill (roughly 1.5 km [1 mi] road length or greater), without sharp turns, and with a speed limit of 64 km/h (40 mph) or greater, with the side windows down.

While in Drive, descending downhill, apply the brakes naturally, only as needed, to maintain the speed limit.

Observe for noise, followed by pulsation/vibration. Observe where the noise, pulsation and/or vibration are most noticeable.

Drive the vehicle on relatively flat ground for 1.5-3 km (1-2 mi) to verify that the condition goes away completely.

Note: If the Front Pad Kit listed is used to correct any condition other than the condition described in this bulletin, the vehicle could experience higher mileage corrosion-induced brake pulsation.

 

If the condition described has NOT been verified, or if the condition observed is NOT most noticeable through the steering wheel, the observed condition may have a different cause, such as a tire/wheel or rear brake issue, etc. Refer to SI for any further related diagnostics.

 

If the condition described has been verified, and if the condition is most noticeable through the steering wheel, and if the condition was eliminated after driving the vehicle on relatively flat ground, typically for 1.5-3 km (1-2 mi), perform the following inspections and repairs.

 

Important:

 

• It is critical to use the proper OEM brake rotors. Use of Non-OEM rotors may prevent the condition from being corrected long term.

 

• If Non-OEM rotors are identified, these rotors are NOT covered under the GM New Vehicle Limited Warranty.

 

 

Inspect the front brake rotors to ensure that they are OEM rotors.

• Remove the brake rotor from the vehicle.

• Inspect the back side of the rotor for the Bosch Logo. If NO logo is present, replace with OEM GM rotors, P/N 25819670.

 

Inspect the front brake rotors for Assembled Lateral Runout (LRO) and thickness variation. Follow SI procedures.

Inspect the front brake rotors for minimum thickness. Follow SI procedures.

If the rotors are within specifications, do NOT refinish or replace the rotors.

If the rotors are out of specifications, refinish the rotors on a qualified lathe, or replace the rotors as appropriate. Follow SI procedures.

Note: To prevent a noise concern, follow the brake pad insulator preparation and seating instructions as referenced in Front Brake Pad Replacement (1500) in SI.

 

Install the specified front pad kit, GM P/N 25910432. Follow SI procedures.

Ensure that the condition has been eliminated under the same conditions.

Cool, are your new brakes doing good? I've never gone to Glendora Chevrolet, I bought my truck at Puente Hills Chevrolet and I take to get serviced there.

This is EXACTLY what my brakes do! As far as getting it fixed what do I have to do? Print this off and take it to the dealer?

I went to the dealer because my brakes had been making noise and I just happened to be in the area. THEY TOLD ME about the bulletin and I had new brakes an 1hr later.

I was in the mountains this weekend and noticed the exact same behavior from my brakes. My brakes have been doing this the last couple trips into the mountains. I was actually going to post about it this AM (thanks for the info). Guess it is time to make my first trip to the dealer for a brake check. Can't complain I guess, first problem at 24,000 miles.

mine shake the wheel when i'm trying to slow down gradually and they resurfaced the rotors once and no new pads it started again another 15,000 miles later. when i took it back they said it needed the rotors turned down again at my cost. unfortuanatly my truck is a 2007 so i don't think it will be covered under this. i figure i'll buy new non-gm rotors and pads when i get it back unless i can get the insurance company to pay for them

My brake pads wore out at 65000kms 5000 out of warrenty my passenger side rotor, warped, probably way before, you know what? GM designs these warranties to get you just out of them and you might get lucky, or if you abuse the hell out of them you might get a freebie, long story short, eat the shit, and just buy a higher quality rotor pad and caliper when it comes time, Ford Dodge and GM they all have their shit qualities deal with it? LOL

 

Minor brake squeal is cured by cleaning and chamfering your wear ends on the pads, EACH end of were the pad contacts.

Mine don't pulsate or vibrate but they give me this nice little annoying squeak just before I stop. Very annoying. They did a recall for this a few months back but it just came back again anyhow. :noway: I think I'll have to take mine in again.

I called my dealer today and they are going to fix mine next Thursday. He said GM has a new set of pads for this and they are going to install them. They are also gonna check the rotors to see if they are ok. Thanks for posting about this guys!

Materials of pads can dictate the type/serverity of noises from braking most are just noises!

 

I know its like people expect a lifetime quality when they buy a vehicle, those recommended intervals for getting your brakes serviced? Try cleaning them instead on your own and the damn squeal won't be so bad! Or be a fool and pay the $100 or so...

 

Hell... theres alot of money to be made off of people who think they're vehicles are junk off of just noise!

right, something so small like brake noise is no reason to climb up on the soapbox yelling at GM, let alone the dealer...nothing on the planet is perfect besides telephone poles and budweiser, so please remeber your truck was built by humans..the design was made by humans...the parts were made and or supervised by humans....whats this all mean? THERES ROOM FOR ERROR....i would love to have a warranty,hell i would be grateful and if i had a problem i would be a man and go with the flow and allow a great company to remedy the problem without dropping bombs, unless your brakes just flat out don't work or your truck sounds like silverware in a blender then just take a deep breath,relax and contact your dealer and explain your concern without going into meltdown...

Yes brakes don't last forever and sometimes they will squeal, but obviously GM screwed up on this one because they put out a Service Bulletin on it. My truck only has about 14,000 miles of easy braking on it and the pads are over half way worn out and the truck shutters like hell when you use the brakes. I was just gonna replace them soon anyhow, but since this Bulletin came out I'll let the dealer worry about since the trucks under warranty. :cool:

    • You can install tailpipes that direct the exhaust sideways vs the OEM one that goes straight back. There are several on the market, do you own research. HOWEVER, you need to make sure the Venturi vents are still intact, otherwise it will throw a engine code. There is a sensor somewhere that detects back pressure on the exhaust. And if it doesn't collect the correct metrics, it will throw the truck into limp mode. 
    • "Teardown" is complete. Head surfaces are clean and ready, new intake is prepped and ready. Coolant drained and water pump is removed, radiator is removed, new hoses and pump are ready.   The replacement intake is also from a '95 (with I think 260k, the odometer said). Noticeably less pitting where it covers the rear coolant passages. I'm not sure if that's a tribute to more frequent use, more frequent coolant changes/upkeep, or if the intake was machined at some point. But it appears I found a good one.   My coolant hoses were original, and the lower hose still retained the factory spring inside. It's not really rusty, but it's got deposits all over it. Unsure if I should re-install it (will thoroughly clean it first). Someone said hose technology has gotten better since 1995 (has it?) and I don't need the spring. I think modern EPDM is what made those hoses last from 1995-2026, so it's a question of how much suction can the water pump really pull, and will it collapse the hose without a spring?   I'm stopped and waiting for parts, however.   When I first brought the truck home, the fan was intermittently hitting the radiator shroud. I could see someone had monkeyed with the shroud (put a bunch of cardboard as a spacer between the upper/lower shroud halves. Someone said the motor mounts have likely failed and the engine has sagged. I wasn't sure I believed that. The engine is really solid in its mounts: To remove the old intake I *just* nearly permanently welded to the heads with freshly cured RTV and gasket snot two weeks ago, I literally had to use the arms on my lift and a chain with a bolt attached to the intake to pull it loose. It almost picked the front of the truck off the ground before ....scuuuuuuuuuuup.... I could actually hear the gaskets tearing and it broke loose and the whole truck settled back down. Motor barely moved.   SO, those parts I'm waiting on... The lower radiator mounts/bushings had completely failed. The radiator needs to be insulated from the rad support, and the bushings help the rad stand at the correct height. The plastic "baffle" was also destroyed at some point. Someone had attached the shroud to it incorrectly, overlapping a joint that should have been underlapped, creating another suspect issue potentially causing things to hit the fan. Broken tabs, side is busted off, and it's perma-formed/bent where it was jimmied incorrectly.   The baffle? Unobtainum. Long since discontinued from GM, of course. Aftermarket/capa/chinese? Also unobtanium. In GM's infinite wisdom, it appears there are at least two different variations whether the Blazer is 2 or 4 door, and I can't yet tell if they shared the same part with the S-pickups. Plan B, if I can't find a viable used one, will be to create a bracket to re-assemble the critical joint I need to seal a gap with the shroud. But that will bug me, it won't be...perfect.   The water pump bolts appear to have been installed with...plumber's putty. I guess, sure, if it works...? I've found a few "backyard fixes" like that. Someone's been here before....   If I can't find someone to jam bamboo under my fingernails to fill my free time this week I think I'll install the driver's power window motor and replace the rear door speaker that's inop. I've got a genuine GM "9.5" ohm working replacement. Why GM used a non-standard resistance....nevermind. Of course they did, you can get more sound from a cheap factory amp that way.   And the saga goes on...

    • I started my install this weekend. Everything was pretty straight forward but I ran into one issue with running power through the firewall. The nipple grommet on my High Country already has a small harness running through it - has anyone else ran into this issue? And on the engine bay side, does the wire basically just penetrate the factory wiring boot? I did this on my '22 Trail Boss and it seems much easier but thats been a few years. My other thought would be possibly drilling a new hole adding a rubber grommet just to the lower left of the factory hole. Thoughts?   Has anyone used a T-harness off the Bose amp and obtained power from there? It seems a little odd that such a small amp needs 3 power leads
    • ///// Ok--Thanks for that info--I could not find yesterday when I looked for the specs on that NAPA filter what I wanted. Their website is not very user friendly. I buy all teh filters for  our three vehicles once or twice a year. Have always run NAPA Gold on everything I own....I buy it thru my Son's account for his business-which he has a Heavy Equipment repair shop-one reason he uses NAPA so much-they have such a full line of coverage for just about anything/anywhere- He gets s  good discount because of volume bought.
