What sets each brand's motors apart from the rest? design wise and such, pros and cons?

I am sure every one has its issues look at the afm on gm's. I haven't been a chrysler fan since the superbee. My dad used to be a ford guy and still is. He never had a problem he couldn't fix himself. But i am a loyal gm owner and the vortec hasn't given me any trouble.

There is alot of hype out there about the Alison being a good tranny because Alison's are used in Medium and Heavy duty trucks (not the 1500/2500/3500) But is it superior in our light duty (1500/2500/3500) to what Ford and Dodge has to offer? If so, why and how?

 

Same thing goes for the Cummins.. alot of hype out there just because Cummins builds bigger diesels for the big rigs. As for the light duty applications for our 3/4 & 1 ton trucks, it's a different story and different engine.

 

As for the Ford- given how they have a new diesel out, it waits to be seen how good of an engine/tranny combo it will be. Between the three in years past, I'd have to say that Ford had more problems with the engine and tranny as compared to Dodge and GM.

i'm not meaning to come off as an ass but you guys haven't layed down any foundation for your statements lol i am a loyal GM fan but my god people must drive other brands for something, if every truck was the same i think we would be buying from a company called american motors

haha i was wondering the same thing...

 

i love my GM trucks but i dont think the 4L60 in my 2001 silverado is going to last... 66,000 miles, it shifts kinda rough and everyonce in a while bucks and the slip yoke thing is bad. i also am petal to the metal about 50% of my driving and i do burnouts and drift a lot so that might have something to do with it.

 

the 4L60 in my 2003 burban completely died at about 117k. NEVER floored or abused at all. replaced it with a brand new 4L60 and the performance is great.. shifts are perfect, no slip yoke shit, no random bucking.. love it.. idk how long it will stay like that but 117 wiht new tranny now has about 145k and itts still perfect.

 

i dont know any 4l60s that have gone over 130k without a problem... it wouldnt stop me from buying a GM truck though everything else is perfect... the GMT800 5.3's are probably the best engines reliability wise.. 2003 burban 145k not a SINGLE problem, no burning of anything, no ticking at all, same with my silverados 5.3... great great engine..

my 5.3 will chatter if its been in the cold all night when started, or the occasional piston slap but whatever its been a damn good motor to me...i think all brand's trannys are flawed and the slip yok problem dosen't really bother me...

you have to remember that a lot of the big 3 use the same transmissions in they're larger vehicles.

The ZF S6-650 was shared by Ford and Chevy.

Now Allison is not a GM Asset anymore...so its a matter of time before they are contracted by other manufacturers.

 

Than there's the Tremec T56 6-speed...used in just about every "sports car" longitudinal mounted engine in the world. With the Viper variant(and SRT-10 Truck) being the stoutest.

 

I think you just get settled into a brand that you buy and don't have issues with...than you stick with that brand. I don't think that any one manufacturer has better or worse vehicles than any other...except that ford and dodge both suck...and make Crap........... :lol::lol::D

My 4L60E went 189k...then shelled out righhhht NOW! Shifted fine then all of a sudden "oh shit, what's that noise" and she wouldn't budge.

IMO 350 is more reliable by 5.3s and 6.0s. There's a reason why there's a crap ton on the road, and they're dirt cheap. 6.0s are just as reliable as 5.3s thouhg, they're the same engine bored out.

 

To the topic at hand, if i could get a Ford frame (better steel), a Cummins diesel, hooked to an Allison tranny, i'd have a damn near perfect truck. But i do like Dirtymax's almost as much. Powerjokes suck.

powerstrokes do suck, never heard anything good about them...loyalists buy a ford and want a diesel and expect the powerstroke to be awsome...i'm a duramax fan myself but the cummins is a superb engine also...i hear alot of chatter about pushrod vs roller cam gas engines? whats the deal?

I like the Vortec engines because they are the pushrod style. Simple setup and easy to work on.

    • Question @diyer2 on this line if you please. Are you saying the shudder is the system turning on and off at the frequency of the shudder? Guess I'm asking if you are saying you have seen it do this with the bi-direction scan tool in graph mode? If so have you been able to discern the 'trigger'. Something is telling to cycle rapidly.    My truck just started doing this recently. 197K on the clock. My response has been M5 anything under 55 mph. I treat it like a lugging stick shift. Gear down and let it spin a bit. Engauge M5, then tow mode and then M6 lets the trans stay in 5th but the AFM is active. Smooth like Skippy.    My thought was that as a machine ages the friction gets lower and as the system is load based, the lower friction would allow it to turn on at ever lower rpm until it reaches the lugging point. And yes I am ignorant of any minimum rpm requirement for the system. If you know that would be useful information.    As you know I run a Scan-Gauge II which allows me to watch the On/Off of the signal to the VLOM. While in the shudder mode I'm not seeing is cycle at that frequency or at all for that matter outside the triggers @newdude posted a few years back. Now is it possible that the refresh rate isn't fast enough to catch it? Maybe. It is why I asked my first question about graphing and trigging parameter.     As we have observed from members here the failure point is all over the map miles wise as you note yourself in your opening post. That by itself begs a few questions like fellows that comment on these lifters failing even after the system has been disabled.     • UPDATE 2: Steering wheel control backlights and control of the cluster can supposedly be achieved by adding a wire to pin 20 of the cluster and tapping it to pin 2 of the main clock spring harness. I'm going to give it a shot - will update  
    • GM Global A pickups 2019-2022 can do OTA programming for the radio.  GM VIP (GM Global B) can do OTAs for almost every module on board.  So a 2022.5 and newer pickup can do OTAs for recalls like the 2.7 fuel flow recall.  EVs get OTAs that improve one pedal driving, radio issues, HVAC issues, updated battery management software, etc.     So age of the vehicle/what GM electrical platform its on will alter what amount of updates can be pushed on OTAs.  
    • Thank You.   So far my new ride is making me look like a genius for going with the 3.0L, as my first fuel refill occurred over three weeks from when I took delivery.  This engine combination is very amazing.  So far no issues and had not done a regen yet.
    • I am curious as to how much fluid you put back in the transmission ( assuming you had replaced the filter to compare to my findings ) and then went through the process of warming up the trans before pulling the check plug to drain out the excess and if you measured how much came back out.    I just found it surprising that some claimed a certain amount less fluid being put in and then draining some back out. The attitude of the truck as per if the surface is level and how the trucks stance is would make quite a difference since the check plug is right at the front of the transmission.
