4wd Clunking In Reverse Noise

Alright, took to the GM place to get transfer case checked out..They cannot find out what is wrong..They say it may have something to do with lift kit..

2005 GMC Sierra Crew Cab 4 door..Z71..I have a 6 inch lift and 35's on 17" factory wheels on it..When I put in 4 hi or lo and use in reverse while and only while turning wheels it sounds like something is binding or cathing..I hear an awful clicking, grinding, snaggin type noise..I am backing up slow and scared to go any faster cause I am scared it may snap something off..Any suggestions? This only happens in reverse and when wheels are turned and moving...I might have noticed this once before going forward with wheels turned and at an angle but been a while back and hasnt happend since due to being scared to use in 4WD...Please Help..

The dealer didn't know what was wrong? HAHA, find a new dealer. Was this clicking, grinding, snagging happening while on dry pavement? If thats the case, then its normal. If the tires have traction and wheels are turned the inside tire has less distance to travel compared to the outside, which causes the binding. Keep it in 2wd, unless you are in a slippery situation and actually require 4wd.

well it was on dry pavement and on dirt..I was just testing it after the lift was put on..It only does it when wheels are turned sharp and moving like turning into driveway it does it..Anyway, I guess I will just use it when I need it, only then may something break..Thanks

Hey,

I have been looking for the same info about my transfer case/4wd. We had a huge snow and noticed that when turning sharp (drive or reverse), there was a noticeable popping/binding sound. It would continue, although not as bad, until betting above 10 to 15 mi/hr.

Is this really normal?

Are there any maintenance issues that should be addressed to help the situation?

The only mods to my truck are +1 tire size and traction bar maxed out. No lift or anything like that....yet.

Thanks for any help that you could give.
