Brake Pulsation

Replaced the rotors and one of the front wheel bearings on my GMT800 (half-ton). Still getting vibration when braking. Sometimes pretty severe. Is there anything besides rotors/hubs that could cause this?

Caliper sliding pins can cause brake pulsing on light to moderate braking, if the pins are not moving freely, as from lack of lubrication.

They recommend using a special grease on these. You can get a packet of it from Auto Zone for about $ 1.

I got the pins pretty well lubed up. I just don't know what it could be. Quite frustrating.

It's either a warped rotor or an out of round or bent wheel. Really not much else it can be. Try rotating your tires and see if it changes.

how hard are you braking? It isn't your antilocks is it,, that will make the pedal vibrate. Just a thought,, DAve

Naw, it isn't the ABS. Somebody suggested that I have the brand new rotors turned with an on the car lathe. I am hesitant to cut into brand new rotors. Especially since they don't appear to be off at all (they're only .002 or less out of true).

Well, loose suspension and steering parts, such as tie rod ends, balljoints, center link ends, etc. can cause excessive vibration while braking as there is more loading on these parts when you brake, and if there is minor play in the various joints, it will show more under braking conditions.

 

Check all steering and suspension parts for excessive play.

 

What brand rotors did you put on the truck? Some discount auto parts store rotors are cheap Chinese rotors that will warp almost immediately after installation. I used a pair of crappy Chinese rotors on a Nissan maxima once and they were warped within several thousand miles.

How about worn out front shocks? Are your front tires cupped real bad?

are the rotors out of round? had this happen with drum rears before, but not discs...

Did you check the rear brakes? My truck had out of round drums when I got it new.

Thanks for all the good info guys, I'll start to check into the front end parts thing. Also, I'll check into my rear brakes. Zembonez, would a bent rim or an out of round tire be more pronounced when braking? I think one of the tires might be slightly our of round.

An out of round tire can mimic warped rotors for sure. Some bounce like hell at certain speeds, some don't. I'd have the tires and wheels balanced. It will tell you if one is bad or not. Sometimes this stuff becomes a process of elimination.

Do you have drums or disc in the rear? If you have drums, put the E-brake on slightly while going down the road and see if you feel it.

Do you feel it in the steering wheel?

 

Either way, if the fronts have been replaced, and it still pulses, I'd replace or refinish the rear drums/ rotors.
