Chevrolet To Discontinue "chevy" Name

GM Wants Chevrolet To Drop "Chevy" Nickname. The New York Times (6/10, A1 Chang) reports on its front page that "On Tuesday, G.M. sent a memo to Chevrolet employees at its Detroit headquarters, promoting the importance of 'consistency' for the brand," and suggested the company and its employees discontinue saying "Chevy," even as "the word is one of the world's best-known, longest-lived product nicknames." "We'd ask that whether you're talking to a dealer, reviewing dealer advertising, or speaking with friends and family, that you communicate our brand as Chevrolet moving forward," said the memo, signed by Alan Batey, VP for Chevrolet sales and service, and Jim Campbell, the G.M. division's VP for marketing. This may prove difficult, as "of Wednesday night, the word Chevy appeared dozens of times on Chevrolet's Web site, chevrolet.com, including a banner on the home page that said, 'Over 1,000 people a day switch to Chevy," and "Chevy" resonates throughout popular culture, with the Times specifically referencing the chorus of "American Pie."

BS! Some smart ass up in some Ivory Tower comes up with a stupid, cheesy idea, and guess what? It gets implemented....This is the new American CEO. College educated, but such a dumb ass when it comes to common sense.

.. it does seem strange... but if GM and Chevrolet are consistent at it, it will change ... over a generation of time

.. most of you on here won't change your use of the nickname Chevy.. and you don't need to... this marketing push is directed at the young and the new Chevrolet buyers

.. when I was a kid, a "Jimmy" referred to any GMC 4-wheel drive truck ... particularly a bush truck that you would use for hunting or fishing trips ... but not so anymore ... so the use of nicknames on your trucks can change over 20 years... or 50 years ...

Waste of time and money! :rollin:

The waste of time is actually being done at this level. It is a simple corp policy that they want to implement, not a world wide ban on the word "chevy". Should have been done at the first sound of the word being used internally. It just amazes me that people outside the company even give this the time of day. And to start a petition is just simply a joke. My god, don't you people have better things to worry about?
