Knock 2006 6.0l

I just started noticing a knock in my 2006 silverado 2500HD. It has the 6.0L in it. It dosent know at idle or at high rpm. Im no mechanic so im needing some advice. I thought an oil change with some royal purple would do the trick but it dosent seem to change anything. Is there anything i can do to remedy this or do i just need to bite the bullet and take it to my mechanic. The truck only has 32000 miles on it.

It's common. It doesn't hurt anything. All gm truck engines develop a tick, knock, or slapping sound eventually. It's inevitable, your GM dealer will say the exact same thing. Don't believe me, take it to them! :D Mine does it to, usually right after you crank it up. :)

I have owned a few 6.0s and they have had the normal 6.0 tick but this thing anoys the hell out of me... its way worse. Is there anything i can do to quiet it down? Would runnin a tank of higher octane fuel through it help?

If it has like a type of rattle knock at high RPM then that means it has a little bit of ping. Run a little high octane fuel on your next fill up and if that fixes it then it's most likely a corroded knock sensor (really common). Why would you even consider removing the air intake, that won't make a d*mn of difference, unless it has dirtied your maf sensor. :)

I was only considering removing the k&N intake because i was thinking about taking it to the dealer. I removed the filter when i changed the oil to look at the sensor and it looked great. I guess i will try the high octane fuel and go from there... thanks for the advice

ok this thing is gettin worse by the day... i havent had a chance to run the high octane gas in it yet because im still at a half a tank... heres a really dumb question... what actually makes a knock?

detonation, a misfire...a noisey injector..if your running lower grade octane then the engine calls for the knock sensors should correct it so it dosen't knock, low octane should cause a pinging more then a knock...

I just heard back from my mechanic and he said it has a crack in the flywheel... apparently it is cracked about 1/4 of the way across it and it is knocking when it flexes. Its heading in to the dealership on monday to be replaced under warranty... Im proud to drive my GM... Thay are going to take care of it under warranty even though its 14 months outside of the 36 month warranty...Thanks for all the help

Huh, I've never heard of a flywheel cracking on a newer gm vehicle. Wonder what caused it, I bet that was some kind of a loud knock. At least it didn't fly apart at high rpms and ruin the motor and transmission and possibly injure the driver like they used to when they got a crack in em' :)

it is a nasty sounding knock... but my mechanic said it would be ok to keep driving it until the dealership can get me in since the cracks not very big

new news... the flywheel is not the only problem... aparantly a chunk of the tranny broke off and was floating around in there and thats what broke the flywheel... now i am waiting on a call back from the dealership on whether the new tranny will be covered under warranty. I should know in the morning.

Well i think this whole ordeal is finally over. I picked my truck up at the dealership at about 5Pm today with a brand new transmission and a brand new flywheel. The top "ear" on the transmisson bell housing had broken off and fallen into the bell housing... that is what broke the flywheel. Needless to say gm covered it all under warranty for just $100 "deductable". Thanks for all of the advice.
