Do You Go To The Dealer For An Oil Change?

Recommended Posts

I went to my dealer--Pohanka Chevrolet in Virginia--for my third oil change today and it will be the last time I do it with the dealer. I had used Wally World [Wal-Mart] for first two changes. They charge $55- for 5-quarts of Mobil 1 5w30 oil and a Fram XG filter + $6.50 for the 6th quart of oil. The dealer had a special for $59- for 6-quarts of Mobil 1 5w30 oil & a Delco filter.

When the service writer brought me the invoice to pay the cashier after I had been there for an hour and a half, he said he had sent my truck to be washed and it would be up quickly. I did not ask for it to be washed. Well after 15-minutes, I asked the service writer to go and get my truck as I wanted to leave. He said it was being washed and would be ready in another 5-minutes. Well when the truck arrived the seat was set nearly all the way under the steering wheel, the steering wheel had been readjusted from what I had set it, the temp on the A/C had been set to 66 degrees, the inside A/C ducts had been closed, and the adjustment on my outside mirrors had been changed. I thought about going back to the dealer, but I was in a hurry. I'll get a call on next week from the dealer asking about the service and I will fill the caller's ear's full.

I travel a lot and Wally World has the same price all over the U S. They also have a record of your prior service no matter where you go to have the oil changed. They even give you a read-out of your tire tread wear and they usually do it in 30-minutes or less.

I do my own oil changes. Pick up the 5 quart Mobil 1 Synthetic Oi jug for 21 bucks at Wal-Mart. In my case buy 2 extra quarts of oil and a filter and up on the ramps my truck goes. The only drawback to wal-mart is they don't use synthetic oil. Prob dino oil. Just a word to the wise. A friend of mine with a mechanic shop gets 1-2 motor jobs a week because the oil change guy at wal-mart forgot to put the drain plug back in or forgot to fill it with oil. LOL

I change mine at home, the jug of Mobil 1 from Walley World and a NAPA Gold filter. I also lube the front end and U joint. That way I know all the grease fittings have been hit. Also a good chance to look around and make sure everything looks good (brake, gas lines, shocks etc). Randy

First off dont use Fram filters they're junk, natorious for failure. And if you do your own oil changes it is suggested to keep the receipts and filter box lid. This I learned from experience when my wifes car engine seized from a failed Fram oil filter. And they wanted to see the records for the purchases before they coughed up the money for repair.

dealer most of the time or i go to autzone and get the stuff....i second the fram being junk....to the OP i've had somethings like that occur like you had, the a/c was probably turned on to make sure it worked, i've got into my truck many times after an oil change and the ac/recirc was on and the fan was going, i'd rather them run everything and catch an odd noise or something instead of letting me drive off and have it blow up on me unaware..dealers have a bad rep for being overpriced and sneaky, i find the prices rather reasonable and i've actually had my dealer turn me away because my truck diden't need it, where as they could of just took my money and said they did it...P.S the driver was probably a midget so the mirrors and seat got moved...i'm very happy with the service i get at the dealer,

I change oil every 3,000 miles and go to the dealer every other oil change. My mechanic, who's shop is about 100 feet from my house, does the in between changes. Who ever does it I always ask for an inspection of everything they can think of. I figure what one misses the other might catch. Only had one oil change on the Sierra so far (just hit 4,000 miles) but the dealer didn't charge me, washed the truck, and had me back on the road in about 1/2 hour. Hard to beat that.

I had been going to Pohanka but never had those problems. They throw in the car wash as a free customer service thing. Ever since Aaron (diesel tech) left, my truck has not been back as he was the only person allowed to touch my truck. Another guy did one day and he got an ear full from him haha. The service manager is a jackass too.

I've since just taken it to a service station I know on Rt. 50. I bring them my oil (Rotella) + filter and they do it for $15 labor. I used to do everything myself but I'm a contractor and time is tight.

I do my own now. When I was leasing the 08 I was constantly getting coupons for $9.95 oil changes from the dealer which would include a tire rotation but since buying the 09 I've had to pay about $35.00 for the oil change so I started doing my own.

On a side note, I've never had a problem with the techs adjusting seats or mirrors as I figure it will lessen the chances of him hitting something if he can see it.

I've heard horror stories from previous Walmart customers . . . . . Also Canadian tire!

I used to take mine to Midas, then they got too expensive and I got a coupon from the dealer. Now I go to the Chev dealer (gm dealer in town--BAD! and now closed down) and I haven't had a problem so far. Price is steep but comparable, they are closer to me than Midas, they have courtesy transport if I need it. I now have a free coupon from the dealer that sold me the 10, so I guess I'll be travelling all the way down to him for that first one, lol ,lol. (don't worry, I can manufacture a reason to drive to the big city so it won't be a tank of gas just for a free oil change, hahaha!)

Quite the service they gave you. :)

At the dealer I work at, most customers are in and out in 1/2 an hour, more or less depending on how fast the office does the paper work. Cars are only washed if the customer requests it. We charge 15.95 for a 5qt oil change, AC delco filter(we only use them) and the 27 point checklist. Synthetic Mobil 1 oil changes are 43.95.

My garage

When my truck goes in for warranty work I specifically tell them not to wash it. On my old truck I didnt realize they would wash it after finishing a recall. Well it was covered in salt (winter) and it came out with a ton of swirls/scratches. I ended up polishing it in 30 degree weather to get it all cleaned up right.

For my 08 GMC 2500HD Diesel, GM sent me a coupon good for 4 oil changes, tire rotations and truck inspection over a 12 month period. Mine starts March 10 through March 11. I pick when the 4 are done.

A very nice freebe.

    • Because that is IDIOTIC, much like this question. They've already been forced to do it by past administrations - why would you roll that back when it's a GOOD thing?  WHO IS ARGUING FOR LOWER MILEAGE???? 😂  NOBODY IS!!   I'm certainly not! What I want is RELIABLE vehicles again that are worth the price paid!    I don't get your logic here ...   In 2003 I paid $2,200 for our '86 Grand Marquis. It's STILL running and I've never been inside the engine, aside for the timing cover since it was leaking, so I threw a new timing set in since that makes sense. Transmission is ORIGINAL. Electric pump in the gas tank is ORIGINAL. Rear end is ORIGINAL. I'd have to hit my head REAL hard to want to pay $60k or more for a car that still can't come close to the comfort, seating and storage space, or reliability of this one. Nothing is even in the ball park! Hundreds of thousands of brands and models have been built and sent to the crusher while this one keeps on going!   https://postimg.cc/Z9XRrCSg   I've got a whole fleet of cars, motorcycles, and a truck close to this age for summer and winter. No one could pay me enough to buy anything built this century. I have zero use for any it.
    • Since I'm the one who has to fix them when they break, I'll take vehicles over 30 years old all day, EVERY day, over ANY modern crap. Have you attempted any repairs on anything built after 2006? It's a friggin nightmare, and gets worse the newer the model year.    If I had the will or desire, I can make any car of any age outside of a Model T (I don't have THAT much will ...) just as powerful, comfortable, and have all the tech the new stuff does, and get pretty close in mileage, too. I prefer SIMPLICITY. The less the vehicle has, the less to fix WHEN it breaks, not IF.   I'm glad you snot-nosed punks don't like them. More for us, plus that keeps the prices from climbing more than they already have.👍
    • Bringing this thread back on topic. I just noticed the incredible lack of bright chrome across the entire new lineup. Even the Denali has tinted the brightwork in the grille and has none elsewhere. None of them have chrome bumpers. As far as I can tell there aren't even chrome mirror caps. I'm curious if this also happens out back? Are there no chrome rear bumpers either? This is quite the departure for GMC.
