Problems W/my Friends Gmt900 Not Starting!

It started about a year ago. The truck would just shut down while driving. It has happened 3 times n the past year. Now the truck wont start. You have to cycle the key 3 to 4 times for it to start.

Dealer will be the last resort, i guess they just lived with it.

Any suggestions on what to check?

There is no codes

Truck is a 2008 LT Silverado with 50k miles

if something is under warranty, i dont understand trying to troubleshoot at all, unless the dealer is 30+ miles away. take it in, demand them to fix what they claim shouldnt break

really.... you have no clue what is wrong.. how can you possibly say it is covered under powertrain? Fuel pump? sure... anything electrical? nope. Won't start? Won't crank or cranks won't start... I've had ignition switches cause this numerous times. Powertrain? Kind of unlikely.

Could be the airmass sensor. My old volvo did the same crap. Nobody could figure out except the dealer. They took it out and cleaned it. No problem after that.

My favorite thing is the computer reboot. Unhook the battery for 20 minutes or so. Does not cost anything and I have seen it work several times.

We can certainly say that if there's even the remotest chance that it's powertrain related, it could be covered under warranty and thus the dealer should be able to have a crack at it. IF the dealer finds that it is not a powertrain issue, then you have the choice to either let them fix it and charge you, or tell them to leave it alone and you'll fix it yourself or at another shop.

I totally get wanting to troubleshoot the problem to some extent before going in to the dealer so you know for sure they're not trying to screw you over, but seriously.... the warranty is there for a reason, and I'd much rather let the dealership discover a warranty-covered issue than have to pay for parts myself, let alone labor.

Will it turn over?

If it won't even turn over my guess is it is a problem with the key. Sometimes when they get worn down the anti-theft thing kicks in. Happened to me in a 98 malibu.

If it does turn over and will just not start then definitely let the dealer figure it out under warranty

Sorry.. it's just I get that every day all day long... wanting me to spend hours figuring out their problem for nothing and then when it's not free, pay nothing and walk away. I work on flat rate my friend. I've got bills to pay.

It's called a diagnostic fee for a reason. The dealers I work with in my area charge one that's less than the normal shop rate. If you have a problem with that concept, you picked the wrong job/career.

This is embarrasing and may sound retarded, but a week after my body lift was installed, my truck shut off while I was driving and also would not start, but the radio and everything else worked. I actually checked all battery cables and they were on the posts and I thought they were nice and tight. Anyways, my old man took a look and losened and re-tightened the negative battery cable and it fixed it all. It was just loose. I felt totally retarded it was the last thing I thought it was haha!

Need more details. Will it crank or not crank when turning the key? Does everything shut off including the power? Or will it crank but take 4-5 tries of cranking before it starts? If 4-5 tries of cranking, I'd suspect a bad fuel pump and or fuel pressure regulator, though I have not heard of this being an issue on the GMT-900s as much as it was an issue on the 800s with the fuel pump and or FPR going south. If no power at all and no crank, than I would lean more towards an electrical issue, tighten down the battery cables, and start from there. I had a phantom no start/no crank/no power issue on my 07 Sierra that the dealer was never able to figure out. I believe the issue ended up being something in the steering column with a pinched wire, or had something to do with the aftermarket Clifford security system I had installed when new. I traded the truck in with the issue still being a factor. Let the next owner deal with it.

Sorry guys i guess I needed to make myself a little more clear on the problem

Already tried the 100k powertrain warranty argument, dealer says its not a power train issue. Warranty covers damage to engine trans and rear end, this would be electrical. Actually when he took it to the dealer it did not want to start then of course it started so no warranty, engine trans and diff are fine, which i agree.

Put the key in and all the bells sound the lights on dash come on but when the key is cycled there is NOTHING. Cycle key 3-4 more time and the truck will then turn on.

Truck does have remote start.

Nobody has messed with this truck other than maintenance, no loud system or anything truck is stock.
