alvocado Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 I asked a shop to drain the front diff when they serviced my tranny and transfer case at 100k miles. After inspecting today, it was clear they didn't so I drained the gear oil tonight. Attached is a pick of the drain plug, which I will forever refer to as "chia plug." So much for the lifetime fluid reco from GM.

vettelovralexand Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Mine had a ton of gunk on it when I changed it at 7K.
C. Charles Hahn Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 This is exactly why I change mine out at 2500 miles and monitor it from there. All the crap from initial break-in makes a real mess, and also makes it hard to tell if you have ongoing wear problems after the parts are all worn in.
gnet158 Posted July 8, 2010 Posted July 8, 2010 Wow, you actually waited for 100k to change your tranny and t-case fluids? Brave man! I'd never wait that long. I have 28K + on mine now and am thinking about having the tranny/t-case/diff changed. Hope you changed your plugs before 100K.

I also use oil analysis from Blackstone labs to determine change intervals vs. guessing. The truck shifts like new and runs great. I run 10k mile engine oil change intervals with 135k on the odometer after lab analysis showed plenty of life in my full synthetic with no metal contamination. The only thing I would do differently is a break in change on the gear oil at 30k to remove gear shavings.

Pulled the rear cover to find 2 qts of a stinky black as coal substance that used to be gear oil and a glob of metallic snot stuck to the magnet. Guess thats pretty normal though. At 100k If you want to see more crappy lookin fluid check out your power steering. Power steering thread
