2007 Silverado 6.0l (vortec Max - Nbs) Compression Test

Due to the dealer no longer performing real diagnostics, I decided to pull and change my spark plugs. Note: I understand why they don't want to do real diagnostic work, they would starve, as it doesn't pay; it's just really frustrating that I can't have the truck I thought that I bought.

I noticed a good amount of wet engine oil on the threads; so I decided to do a compression test.

To sum up the results, I have a range of 120psi to 135psi.

I also used a bore scope to take a few pictures of the pistons and valves, the number 7 piston has weird rusty looking (or bronze) spots, and the other weird thing I saw was the number 6 (I think) cylinder valve opening looked to be starting to "chip."

My main question is, what should the compression be in this engine?

I'm sick of the dealer telling me that there is nothing wrong with this thing. I can feel the thing "buck" or mis-fire on the highway with any bit of a load on the engine (meaning if I turn the AC on, it gets bad), not to mention when pulling my boat.

does your truck have the knock when cold and a rough idle?? mine does and it bugs the crap out of me and the dealer says its normal they all do it

Well, it certainly does idle rough, not sure about the knock when cold. I did have a problem last year when it was raining or I went through a puddle. The dealer found a knock sensor code and tightened up the harness, seemed to do the trick.

The dealer says the rough idle is normal due to the engine needing to run lean, I hate it and the engine, but what can you do? Until they admit there is a HUGE problem with this engine, we're SOL.

Your compression numbers are quite solid. If the engine has an actual miss, it will eventually trigger a stored code. Might not set the SES light, but could still be storing a code.

    • Looking up on the web you can the information that would seem obvious. You asked engine components to do more. You get more wear. The answer is they can last just as long but required more maintenance. Apparently having to change lifters, cam and associated components are maintenance or repairs. In some research the normal life span of valve train components are 80-100 miles with 3-5K miles oil change. So the next logical conclusion would be cost per mile. I use that analogy with my wife all the time with vehicles. My Odyssey is approaching 170K. The cost per mile will go up at 200K with maintenance. Looking at a low cost car. A K-4 with a 10-10 warranty. Selling my Ridgeline that’s about to hit the same maintenance milestone. My argument becomes not only I get worry free driving. But at no cost increases. Because I take the money from my Ridgeline and maintenance savings and other potential savings. I’m driving for free. So tying it with a bow. It makes you wonder. Is this a grand conspiracy by the auto makers? Raise the potential maintenance high enough. Buyers by extended warranty to 100K miles. Do the minimum maintenance required. Trade in at the warranty end. How long should they last? That question is what keeps people up at night. The answer is much more complicated than it used to be.
    • Could you cite your source on this?  I cannot find any reference to the US secretly taking the oil.  I find references that the US helped oil tankers move through the Strait of Hormuz, but nothing about what you're stating.
    • Same thought, also the everything doesn't have the details real photos do (talking about the noise in the photo)
    • Since the media YOU and your buddies are programmed to watch failed to mention this, I'll fill you in.   Trump admitted today that we've grabbed 150 MILLION barrels of oil from the Iranian tankers locked in the Strait by our Navy. We turned off their transponders, took them out to sea in the dark of night since they have zero radar capabilities anymore, offloaded every drop onto another vessel, and put them back by morning so no one was the wiser. That oil has been en-route THROUGHOUT the entire conflict.   Main reason he admitted this is to let even guys on our own side who joined leftists in complaining about the prices that he hears us all, and has taken steps to make sure this didn't spiral into a BAD situation ... just like the mainstream media has been PRAYING would happen, just so they could gloat. Amazes me how these people are rooting for the destruction of THEIR OWN HOME, just to make a President they don't agree with or like look bad! That's next level TDS!   I know your not capable of giving our President the benefit of the doubt, again due to your deep programming, but THIS is why oil never hit $150 a barrel as predicted by your programmers, AND the reason oil continues falling. Like I said before, Trump's got a plan, and this is proof of it. By the end of his term, we're going to be in GREAT shape for a change!   Since I just spent $3,000 this week on #2 heating oil and gasoline, the war most certainly is ending! 🤣   https://mxmnews.com/article/ba359ac9-2711-4851-92de-187f2400f2dd?breaking-trump-cancels-iran-strikes-deal-now-approved-by-all-parties
    • No leaks. Replaced the condenser 3 years ago. Problem was found to be caused by the A/C blend door actuator. Just replaced it and it's blowing out the cold air it used to when I bought it.
