Bose Sub Woofer Replacement

In case anyone is referencing this thread for their amp install...

The clearance between the seat and the back wall is a major consideration. I mounted my amp on a .5" piece of ply wood and I got lucky that it fit. If I were doing it again today, I would use something much much thinner to glue to the back wall. DO NOT mount your amp to the back wall with self tapping screws. That is just plain lazy and may cause a huge ground loop between the amplifier chassis and the truck.

I did exactly that on my '02 (self-tapping screws) ex-cab. Never had a problem. That system was great. I wound up redoing the whole thing and putting the amps on a board...But I didn't have a problem while they were screwed directly into the wall.

Here was the first try, before I cleaned up the wiring:

Hahaha I knew someone was going to post something like that...just didn't expect it to be you.

Glad it worked for you. In my last car I mounted my amps to the sheet metal and I ended up with some crazy noise problems.

Sorry for bringing up a slightly old thread...

Nice work Ahsmo! I was thinking of giving this a try in a friends truck. I've got an old Phoenix Gold XS8 that does quite well in small enclosures.

Also, I noticed someone mentioned AudioControl processors. While my truck doesn't have the Bose system, I am planning on adding the factory navigation and would like to install an AudioControl LC6i and use the EQ in my amp or possibly a DQXS and call it a day. Have you thought about going that route?

Thanks fastev. I am a huge PG fan... I never considered the XS8. http://download.phoenixphorum.com/Manuals/...s_and_Boxes.pdf looks like it would work really well if you did the same thing I did.

audiocontrol makes some nice stuff. Did you see the JBL unit I posted?

I must have missed the JBL... I assume you are referring to the MS-8? Seems like a great unit, but too rich for my blood as of now. I've used AudioControl for a number of years in other vehicles, and always had great results.

I modeled a handful of subs for the Bose replacement, and the PG ended up as one of the standouts. I actually forgot I even had it and stumbled upon a box with a couple amps and some subs while looking for something else in my garage last week. To my surprise I found the old little XS8, a pair of PG Xmax 12's, an OLD JL 10w3 (which was always one of my favorites), and a pair of PG Titanium amps! The PG stuff is all probably 10 or 12 years old now, but all from the best days of Phoenix Gold in my opinion...

I had a xmax 12 in my first car and it slammed. I loved that thing. If you want to let those Titanium amps go...I know a good home for them after the capacitors are replaced ;)

MS-8 looks like everything you were looking to do without having to rely solely on your ears and ebay has some for less than the huge premium they are expecting people to pay. The little built in amp would be very nice for a modest active setup or a Bose factory amp replacement. To keep myself from spending more money, I didn't measure the area where the Bose amp is but I am willing to bet that it will fit.

Regardless, If you do gut the Bose woofer let me know how that XS8 sounds!

Dumb question for you audiophiles:

Why does the rear speakers in newer chev trucks have so much lower volume than they used to have? I know they are there but they are barely loud enough to hear! What gives?!?!?!

I don't know if that is true(I've never heard a nbs truck) but I would assume that it is to keep the sound stage in front of the driver and high up on the dash. Sound stage meaning where the sound "sounds" like it is coming from. More sound from low and behind the driver would pull the sound stage back and down.

I forgot to say how much this setup cost me:

$50 For the Re rex 8" sub

$70 for the Boss Audio amp

$10 for the 8 gauge amp kit

$10 for the wood and glue I used

$70 for the resin, hardener, and brushes (I bought the very expensive Westmarine stuff. Only good thing about that resin is that it does not smell at all which I have had a problem with in the past with Bondo brand resin)

I had the tools, staples, some electrical tape, odds and ends, and screws.

So for this major improvement over the Bose system I spent $210. Had I not glassed in the speaker rings I would have only been out $140.

Not bad! Somehow these projects usually manage to get out of control way too easily; $210 is very reasonable. Do you have any plans to take it further-- more than just the sub upgrade? And if I decide to part with those amps I'll be sure to let you know...

I'm happy with what I have right now.

When I get a project car in a few years, I have a few tricks for it. I have a Roadster 66 and a set of Dynaudio 3 ways sitting in storage waiting for the right car.

Its been a while. I'll have to look at the wireing diagram I have and see which ones I tapped. I just used a speaker wire that had rca connections on the other side for my amp. I picked them up at radio shack for about $15. Been working fine for about 6 months with no amplified door chimes or turn signals. I'm about to change out my front speakers and add another amp by passing the bose altogether. that is as soon as I make up my mine which components I'm going to go with LOL

So did you find your wiring diagram showing which wires are for the low level outputs from the stereo to the sub amp?

This thread was exactly what I was looking for (even if it is a bit old). I just received my 8" JL W3 and cut my Bose box. Using the leasons learned on this post hopefully I come out with a good result. If anyone is interested, I'll start posting pics and progress.

    • My area is one of the most affluent areas in Texas. And yet affordable housing is close by. My family business pays top wages and turnover is very low. You can’t but people in a box if you want to succeed the opportunity is there.
    • It was previously working, but the continually running compressor threw me for a loop. It wouldn't be out of the realm of possibility that a 26 year old AC system had lost some of its charge and could be exhibiting low charge indicators, so I thought I had it licked. Add some refrigerant to get the low and high pressures in range like on the old 134 systems.   I learned the continuously running compressor is normal, and that I need to know how much is in the system, as well as needing to meter what goes in. I'm only used to working on older R134a and R12 systems that aren't variable displacement. This is how we learn...LOL.   Long story short, I had a 20% off coupon for a new Jiffy Lube that opened nearby. I took it up there yesterday and they did an evac/recharge using their brand new machine from Mahle. Had a good conversation with the guy, they loved the car and I was out of there for $159 plus tax. Digitally measured charge, exactly 1.5lb of refrigerant went in.
    • In most areas of the country, wages have trailed CPI increases over time (let's say, since the 70's) and things like housing, energy, and food have vastly outpaced wages on the whole. Can't ignore that, it's very real.   That isn't to say there aren't ways to live in ways that mitigate some of that, including moving to cheaper areas of the country. In KNut's neck of the world, median housing prices in "nearby" Dallas are more like $500k. If you're raising a family and young in a successful career, your economic opportunities are probably going to be better living closer to Dallas than Cornhole. A 3 hour (6+ round trip) daily commute probably isn't tolerable for most folks. Grumpy mentioned economic migration; but we've seen what happens when people populate and grow an area. It becomes more expensive when economic opportunities come to roost.   One thing different now from back in the 70's is our quality and standard of living has changed. Healthcare is light years better, for example. But it's also much more expensive. And we have communication and information/tech tools that folks in the 70's could never imagine, and they're accessible to people of just about all incomes. Cars are light years safer, faster, and filled with tech advances. Homes are larger, more energy-efficient, and more luxurious on the whole, from starter homes to luxury homes.   Seattle was once affordable. My folks came here in the 70's with a lot of other people from California looking to escape uncontrolled sprawl, smog, and rising prices in the Bay Area. Seattle and the surrounding area has grown considerably; The home they bought for, I think it was $70k or $80k in the late 70's is now worth $1.2M today. The same house.   So while there have been obvious boosts in some areas of quality and standard of living, regarding opportunity, that's a bit more nuanced. It's really not possible for young people to get started in similar situations in areas of the country that have become "HCOL" (high cost of living). There are many more areas than before, which is to say they exclude younger workers or make their lives significantly harder. They have to commute farther and longer to afford to live in the area. They have to take outsized risk, take on more debt, significantly delay family planning. Or, they could move somewhere cheaper, but there's usually a loss of economic opportunity that comes with that. Even for the same job, it may pay a lot less in a LCOL.   What I don't like are Boomers with phones thinking they have all the answers and outright saying that if people stopped paying for their cell phone that they'd be rich. It's as stupid and misguided as people who think they'd only be rich if taxes weren't so high. Sorry guys, Elon proved you wrong on that one, I guess you're just lazy and blaming your own situation for the reason you're not wealthy. Mobile communication is basically an expectation in a modern society and workforce and it's often cheaper than having a copper landline these days, so... What's your point?
    • My 2008 started exhibiting similar symptoms, wasn't 'cold' enough. I went through a pretty extensive diagnostic process for a DIY'er with limited OBD access. System evacuation and recharge included.   Noticed one day the passenger side was cold (I'm never over there so took awhile to notice).   Pulled the drivers side blend door actuator out, disassembled it and cleaned it out. Put it back in and did some kind of reset and it fixed the problem.   Long story short, it wasn't the A/C system at fault, the blend door wasn't moving to full cold position.
    • Just got in two back to back road trips of about 700 miles each with my new 2026 2500HD trail boss.  Really nice highway cruiser. Two very different trips - both loaded with gear for my band. First trip was to Durango for an event with Indian Motorcycle - saw some really nice bikes while out there! All mountain driving on back country highways - very pretty scenery - lots of hills along the way including a crazy pass that went up to 11,000 feet! Overall MPG for that trip was 15, speeds were typically 60-70 range depending on road.   This past weekend was into rural Nebraska, so mostly fast interstate (76 and 80) with some fast 2 lane getting to / from the final destination outside of North Platt. Speeds mostly ~80.  Also mostly flat although somehow dropped from 5K to 3K feet and then back up getting back into CO - didn't really notice it was subtle probably over a long distance. Overall MPG for the trip was 14.   Truck is still barely broken in - just got past 2K miles on the second trip. We survived some torrential thunderstorms in NE on Sat. night - especially driving to the hotel after the gig at 1AM.  Truck didn't skip a beat - I think the weight of these HD trucks really reduces the hydroplane chances.   All good - made it back to Denver area mid day on Sunday for fathers day.   I did a quick calculation to compare MPG and overall trip cost to my previous truck, a 2018 Colorado V6.  From previous experience I would have expected to see a 4mpg improvement on both trips.  Based on current gas prices which are starting to come down but still $0.75 to $1 higher than they should be based on barrel pricing, each trip was about $40 more.  Really not much of a concern in the grand scheme of things I must say.
