Any Recommendations On A Replacement Ecm?

I have a 2007 Tahoe that I fear the computer (ECM) is needing to be replaced. That said, anyone have any recommendations on aftermarket or affordable rebuilt/remanufactured solutions rather than get reamed by the dealer?

There is always salvage yards. If you get an ECM it will still have to be programmed for your truck. What makes you believe your ECM has died?

Well, nothing definite for sure yet. Truck runs fine....just having no success resolving an issue with the EVAP Purge Valve circuit - keeps setting DTC P0443 and check CHECK ENGINE light. Replaced the valve, checked for leaks, had it too the dealer and all indications are that the valve is working properly (and the computer is actuating it properly). But, even still P0443 will not stop coming back leading me to believe that although the computer may be actuating the valve properly it is not sensing / seeing what it thinks it should see and keeps setting the fault. Could there be a bad ground or some other seemingly unrelated connection that is throwing the computer off???? Bad grounds I know can be hard to find sometimes but if that was the case I would think there be more wierdness going on then just this one thing. Not a real big problem right now, but just an annoying nerve racking thing to have a CHECK ENGINE light on all the time. If I lived somewhere where they did emissions inspections, this could be a really big deal. But right now, nothing a little piece of black electrical tape placed over the light won't fix. I know that's generally not a good idea but I REALLY REALLY want to avoid the dealer right now...Bad experience on this very issue with the dealer. They looked at it, replaced the purge valve that I just replaced (charging me double) and still didn't fix it.

Did the dealer tech do a smoke test on the evap system? If not do it. Very doubtful the PCM is bad.

No, he didn't. He didn't seem to be that smart. About all he did was say he suspected a leak right there at the outlet of the purge valve. I don't think he was that smart because he actually left the wires disconnected from the purge valve, ran his diagnostics with his Tech-2, and then told me, "You still have a problem, it's setting P0443 again and I believe it's a problem with the tube connected to the purge valve." Seeing that I was already into this butt job for $200 already, I said, "just put everything back together and I'll be on my way."

Well, giving him the benefit of the doubt, I went to my local auto parts store, bought some tubing and hose clamps, and repaired the supposed "vacuum leak" the mechanic was referring to. Low and behold, NO MORE PROBLEM! I'm elated. No more CHECK ENGINE light. Now I can rest comfortably at night! I admit, I was skeptical. I even went so far as putting black electrical tape over the CHECK ENGINE light. But, I found myself peaking under it occasionally to see if it was on. And much to my surprise it was always off when I looked. So, CHECK ENGINE light is off, life is good again.

The moral of the store, vacuum leaks suck!

If it does really need an ECM, isn't it covered in the 5 year 100,000 mile warr?

That is a good question? I really don't know. I had a chevy dealer print out everything that was included in the "powertrain warranty" which is what you are talking about and I didn't see the ECM in there....

it should be. The EVAP system is emissions related, most emissions items have a longer warranty period than the standard 3yr/36k so be sure to question that... either way the easiest thing is to contact the dealer and ask.

I can't find anything definitive regarding emissions warranty. The powertrain warranty is 5yrs/100,000 miles. Another dealer I frequent printed out all 18+ pages of the stuff that is covered on the powertrain warranty and I didn't see anything like this on it.

It may be called the Body Control Mod, or BCM.

No, the ECM and BCM are two completely different animals in these trucks.

OK, I wasn't sure about that. Are both units covered in his warr?

Parts Coverage - Federal Emissions Warranty

There are literally hundreds of parts that are covered under Federal Emissions Warranty. There are however some differences from one model year to another. There are also some differences for various engines, especially when comparing a gasoline engine to a diesel engine. There are also major differences between trucks that are over/under 8,500 pounds gross vehicle weight (GVW).

Even though there are many parts covered under the Federal Emissions Warranty, there are very few that are covered for 8 years or 80,000 miles. Some parts that are covered under the Federal Emissions 8/80 Warranty are listed below. The parts coverage was taken for the model year 2007 and for gasoline vehicles under 8,500 GVW.

•Catalytic Converter

•Catalytic Converter Shield

•Transmission Control Module

•NGV Module

•Powertrain Control Module (PCM)

Even though there’s not a lot of parts coverage for 8/80, in some cases the repairs on some of these parts could run the car owner well over $1,000 in repairs.
