Repair Body Mount Nut On 2010 Silverado

The weld holding the middle body mount bolt nut on both the driver and passenger side of my 2010 Silverado. Anyone have this problem and know the repair?

Haven't had this problem, but on a 2010 the repair would be to bring in back to the dealer. Do you have any pics of it? How did you notice the welds had broken?

No pics. Can't see or get to the nut. When I tried to remove the bolt using a 1 inch rachet, the bolt began spinning. I contacted the dealer. He said, 'Not Warranty' due to me attempting to remove the bolt to install nerf bars. I told him that all I used was a hand rachet wrench. The nut must not have been welded very well or the weld on the nut broke loose during installation of the body on the frame. He said that Chevy would not warranty this due to the customer attempting to remove the bolt. I really believe this is just poor quality on Chevy's part. I've had 2 previous Chevy trucks, 1 GMC, and 2 Toyotas and never had this problem.

GM just issued a bulletin to dealers to look at this concern. They dont have a fix yet, but it needs to be taken to a dealer so the engineers can work on the problem.

General Motors is aware of a condition where the bolt retaining the cab to the frame may be difficult to remove. Further investigation will reveal the cage holding the nut inside of the cab has lost the retention on the nut, allowing the nut to spin freely in the cab. General Motors is currently requesting dealerships which have a subject failure submit a Field Product Report with pictures of the failed cage. For information on how to submit a Field Product Report, please see bulletin 02-00-89-002.

Thanks for the info, Rolliing. Just what I needed to bring to the dealer. Dealer was acting as this was an isolated problem which was my fault for the failure.

Spiral--Started the same job on my 2010 and the first bolt did the same thing---this is the 6th set of nerf bars i have installed on all older trucks---am going to my dealer on monday morning. Thought you may want to know misery loves company.

I wonder if this a problem across the board w/ this "cage" or isolated to a certain plant? The former could be a design issue. The latter could be caused by issues pertaining to the spot welding equipment in the plant where the trucks were built.

I had the same problem yesterday. I was trying to install a new set of nerf bars on my Silverado when the middle and rear body bolt nuts on the drivers side both broke free of the body. I called the dealer and was told this was not a warranty issue. I was able to bring the truck to a friend's auto repair garage and put it on the lift. After great frustration (only have 250 miles on the truck) we drilled a 1 1/2 inch hole in the side of the body mount and were able to get a wrench on the bolt. We removed the bolt, put on the bracket and tightened the bolt and nut. The rear one was more complicated. We had to remove the rear seat (extended cab), pulled back the rug and bored a 1 1/2 inch hole in the floor. The hole wasn't perfect so we couldn't get a socket on the bolt. We then opted to tac weld the bolt to the body and were then able to remove the bolt. We then installed the bracket and attach the nerf bar. We didn't have any problem with the bolts on the passenger side. We were able to cover the hole under the truck bu the middle mount with a piece of rubber coated adhesive aluminum tape to hopefully prevent water and future corrosion. I am so disappointed in having to do this to my NEW 2010 Silverado!!! Hopefully Chevy corrects this issue. This problem has just happened to me installing nerf bars. The mount under the ext cab door on the drivers side was extremely hard to remove. I added a pipe to the breaker bar I was using and the retaing nut or whatever it is broke. I am calling the dealer this morning and am wondering if anyone has got any satisfaction from GM on this. If anyone has had the dealer fix the problem, how much did it cost?

I brought it in the other day to have them look at it. They confirmed the nut has slipped.

They are going to repair it under warranty next week. I guess it involves cutting a hole in

the cab to get at the nut. Have to take it to their Body Shop.

I'm glad I have a great dealer.

Add me to the list of victims. Back in July when I was installing my cab steps, the center driver side bolt just spun and spun. I ended up just leaving it. That bolt seemed much tighter than the others too.

I have a set of Nasta polished SS nerf bars on order for my 2011 GMC which I just picked up on Saturday and I hope I don't run into this problem when I install them. When you guys opened up the sheet metal to get at the nut, what did you find? Did the nut cage break loose or was the nut welded to the body mount and the weld failed? If it was a bad spot weld on the nut cage I wonder if this problem was specific to one assembly plant. I will let you know how my nerf bar installation goes either way.
