2011 Sierra 6.2 6sp

I have had many GM trucks from the 4.8 with 3.23 and the 5.3 with 3.42 and have now just purchased the new 6.2 with what I thought was 3.73 gears. Turns out my friend looked at the window sticker and it said 3.42! When I test drove it after driving my lifted 5.3, I was wondering where this extra 100 HP was. I chalked it up to GMs tq management etc etc because my friend has the VMAX 6.0 and after he got a programmer, it opened right up. Now that I know it has 3.43 I am disappointed, but it is what it is. My question is, is it worth it to try and get 3.73?

Welcome to the site. I just purchased the 6.2 with NHT and 3.73's gears. Personally, I think the combo is amazing. I've driven many with the 3.42's and quite frankly a little like you, I wasn't impressed. My previous truck was an 07 Vmax with the 4.10s and 4-speed. That truck didn't/doesn't hold a candle to this new power train.

 

With that said, It's not cheap swapping out gears. You can figure $1500 for a gear swap easily. Then you have programming involved for the new gears. If I were you, I'd go drive one and see if the difference is worth it to you.

Get the truck tuned. The 3.42s mated to the 6spd has a huuuuge gearing advantage to any of those other trucks you've had or driven. .. even without the 6.2.

 

Guys are getting their 3.42 6spd 6.2L trucks into the 13s at the track with a good tune and no other major mods.

 

In other words.. its not the gears holding you back....

Is the stock tundra faster that my sierra? I have driven it and it seems that is the case.

I believe they're neck&neck based on published 1/4 times from tests.... but the sierra has more capabilities for tuning.

 

They're both fast trucks.... very fast for being "trucks"

Hey Erick,

 

It is fun to tinker around with gear swaps and such but these days and in this case it will be quite expensive and may not yield the results you desire. I agree with tuning and re-programming the engine first. If you want to check the effects of a quicker rear end ratio, throw on a set of the smallest diameter wheel/tire combo you can find and compare your 1/8 mile times.

Thanks guys, ill just stick with the gear ratio I have untill it gets a little older and I can find another read end to swap it out. On a side note, I put it in M mode and shifted it myself, this really brought out the beast in her

Get a tune! You will not regret it one bit, it really wakes that 6.2 up!

A tune or a programmer? I heard you shouldnt get a tune until you have at least exhaust intake and headers. I wouldnt know where to get a tune in the first place.
