Wax/sealant On A New Truck?

Recommended Posts

Ok guys, having owned a used black truck, I'm constantly washing and waxing this thing to keep it looking top notch and it has scratches and chips that I have no clue where they came from, and to be honest it bothers me! So now that I'm finally ready to buy a new vehicle, I'm going to stay away from black for a truck.

I'm most likely getting a Blue Granite truck, hopefully it won't be the pain that the black truck is to keep looking new!

Anyways, I'm looking for advice on what to do to it first to ensure a proper start to its life for its paint quality. I've heard not to wax new vehicles, but these things are heat treated from the factory, so I think it'd probably be ok?

I've heard awesome things about race glaze (which is a sealant I believe?), so I was thinking about throwing a coat of that on there and then another coat or two of wax to start things off. Any other suggestions on other brands?

My favorite color is the taupe, with the blue granite in a close second, but I'm afraid the taupe will be almost as bad as black. So I'm going with blue granite haha.

Any advice or opinions? Thanks in advance.

The truck does have a scuff on the passenger rear quarter panel, I work for the dealership, and most likely a golf cart got into the side slightly or something, the dealer is sending the truck to the body shop either way tomorrow whether I take that truck or not.

Well, you can wax a new vehicle without issue. Taupe gray is basically the same as Storm gray. They are alot different than a black truck. It's no where near the same. It has a metallic fleck that hides alot.

Thats the problem with black... Looks beautiful all shined up and with its swirled it looks horrible.. I strictly use Meguiar's products on my black truck.. I use a clay bar to remove bonded contaminants, then I will use a Finishing compound to with a high speed buffer that actually levels the clear coat around the paint, following compounding I use a pure polish to add more gloss, then finally seal with a synthetic sealant.

Polish/Glaze is the same thing. Feeds the paint with oils it loses through oxidation, but since clear coats there is not really oxidation anymore like the single stage paints are.

Wax/Sealant is either a carnauba based or a synthetic based. Winter I use a sealant for better protection against the salt, and in the summer I use a carnauba based for the looks.

Hope that helps,

Nick

That is a myth. It is perfectly fine to wax a new vehicle. Now if you have a freshly painted car done at a bodyshop you want to wait 30-90 days.

Check out the forums at www.autogeek.net. This will probably overwhelm you but there is a ton of help.

I use DP poli Sealant on my truck topped with PoorBoys Natty paste wax.

First thing I would do is make sure the dealer doesn't wash the new truck. The dealer usually uses cheap, dirty rags and towels which causes swirls and scratches.

Wash the truck using the 2 bucket method with grit guards. Wash the top above the door trim first then was below the trim. DO NOT use the wash cloth, pad, etc above the door trim after you have used it on the bottom. Invest in some quality microfiber towels don't use the cheap China made towels they will scratch and swirl the paint.

Wash, Clay bar the truck, then wash again, put a coat of polish/sealant, then wax.

Check out Adams to read about Proper Car Car.

I use Adams products as well. A lot of it has to do with the way you prep the truck during washing, like Brad519 stated...

Thanks for all the replies! I'll start with a good thorough clay bar, then a good sealant, and then a coat of wax or two..

Also, I'm having line-x installed in the bed and on my toolbox, should I wait to wash the truck for any period of time for the line-x to cure? I guess I could ask them when they do it, but I figured I'd add a little to the post.

Signed papers on the Blue Granite, and will be picking it up this week, apparently one of our "salesmen" hit the passenger side quarter panel with a golf cart, and left some minor scratches in it, its nothing serious. But I told them I wanted it sent to the body shop on their dime and fixed right before I would take delivery. Its super minor and would likely buff out, but this is my first brand new truck, and I want it perfect to start out.

I'll have to get some pics of it and the Dmax up.
