Shifting Issue In 05 Silverado

I have an '05 Silverado crew cab with a 5.3 and I imagine a 4L60E tranny. When I went to leave for work this morning, I backed out of the driveway and put it into drive, went about a block accelerating normally, and heard a clunk and it was like I was in neutral. Went through the gear range and reverse and 1 worked. Noticed that if i got up to speed I could shift into 2 and it would work. If i pushed either 1 or 2 very hard it would make a whine and slip. Once I got up to speed in 2 I could shift into 3. No whine in 3 but if I slowed down enough or stopped, when it would down shift I would loose it and would have to go back to either 2 or 1.

I only got close enough to check it once, but it appears that I could go into D if I got up to speed in 3.

The ATF was just below the hatch, but no change when i topped it off.

I just got this truck about 10k ago and it has 128k on it. I don't believe that the transmission has ever had a service done and was planning on doing it this spring.

Any ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.

its done ,go back where ya bought it and throw the keys in their face.

or ....

take it to a trans shop or dealer that has a "trans guy" for a road test

as ive said before GM has a rebuilt trans with a 3 yr warranty ,awesome deal, the cooler gets flushed and flow rate thru the cooler is recorded for warranty purposes

getting yours built takes twice as long and has a 1 yr warranty

same EXACT thing happend when the tranny went on my 2003 suburban 5.3 4L60 with 120,000 on it. i dont even remeber what went wrong, but the whole trans was done. replaced it with a brand new GM 4L60 and im very happy i did that. the truck rides perfect now.

GM does not sell brand new,let me be clear, its a rebuilt unit called a Service Replacement Transmission Assembly SRTA ,pronounced "serta"

I'd rather not go with this option since it was my parent's.

Would any GM dealer with a service shop do the SRTA and would you stick with the 60E?

Thanks.

you have to stay with the 60

yes any dealer can change a transmission and they HAVE TO flush the cooler and record the flow rate thru it because in the past ,GM is convinced that plugged coolers can and have blown up transmissions and they are correct as the return circuit from the coolers goes to the lube circuit of the tranny

its quite a machine that does both of these services,it induces shop air into the flush and really is rather violent when the tranny oil and air is pushed thru the cooler first back flushing, then swap the lines and flush forward and then a quick check on flow ,a code is recorded on the work order ,tranny put in and down the road you go.

my 3-4 clutch went for a shit on my truck ,i was able ti fix just that clutch and before i left GM i bought a SRTA and thru it in,

i had a SRTA in my 85 c10 diesel suburban and put 260K km on it ,it was in great shape when i tore the 3-4 clutch out of it ( i took out the engine for my 93 i bought ) and took the tranny out to ,crushed the old sub....sniffle sniffle lol

im rather chatty today lol

Would it be a good preventative maintenance idea just to change the cooler out at about 100,000 miles?
