Why most GM use bare metal lines on the brake lines and fuel lines stupidest design ive seen atleast coat them in some kind of sealer that is resetiant to rust.First my 99 sierra's brake lines rust out because gm forgot to but a rubberized spacer between them to hold them from rubbing together NBD just 700 bucks for all new brake lines.Now my 90 sierra fuels rust out cost?1000 bucks at my buddys shop WITH a mechaincs discount!!!.Such and easy problem to avoid honestly how much would it be for GM to put rubber hoses over all the brake lines and tranny cooler line,fuel lines they'll make their money back with 2 months.But hey thats just me.This is also very stupid before the fuel lines connect to the fuel cell they are rubber.Wow is all i have to say anymore.Dont get me wrong the motors are strong tranny/rears are the same but the chassis need attention im not sure about the newer trucks.I SUGGEST ANYONE THAT HAS A TRUCK AND ITS NOT IN A GARAGE TO COAT THE WHOLE UNDER CHASSIS WITH SOME KIND RUST RESTIANT PAINT OR SPRAY CAN.YOU'LL BE SURPRISED WHAT A 6.00 DOLLAR CAN OF THIS WILL SAVE YOU.TRUST ME I KNOW!SOME PEOPLE SAY IM COMPLAINING NOT REALLY JUST TRYING TO SAVE PEOPLE A HUGE HEADACHE..Sorry for the caps!it seems to get the point across better.

nhtsa is actually investigating the 99-03 trucks due to brake line rusting concerns- as of right now its one step below a recall.

Good, I hope they recall them. Although, mine are still shiny, I guess that's southern living for you. I wish those MF'ers would recall the crappy ABS systems they put in these things.

All of their ABS systems suck. I had a 2001 Crapalier that the ABS would activate all the time just from bumps, without even useing the brakes at all.

 

I now have a 2001 Venture van and the ABS in that never works. I replaced both front hub bearing assyemblies & both rear hub bearing assymblies at the sametime & with in the 1st 6 weeks the ABS light was on again. It doesn't bug me tho, as not having the ABS working allows you to actually drive the vehicle.

 

This is why I really love my '76 to '87 4x4. Simple to drive, & simple to fix.

Do hub bearings affect ABS? Who diagnosed the ABS problem and installed the bearings as the fix? To the OP, your complaining about living in Jersey and having fuel lines rust out after 21 years? Are you the original owner and do you drive on the salty beaches? Do you rinse the bottom when you wash? In a perfect world no owner responsibilty would be great.

Each hub has a speed sensor in it. thats how the computer knows what wheel is locking up. Either the hub goes or the wire harness goes.

Just one of those 2 for 1 deals GM does.... (all of them do it actually) Its a Hub Assembly/Wheel speed sensor all in one but they get to charge you for both, whether both actually needed replaced or not. I hate it, but what can I do? I AM ONLY ONE MAN!

metal rusting after 20 years is not unreasonable. Especially if you live up north. Even the 99 is now 12 years old. Salt and snow does take its toll on metal, even if its coated. Thay why manufacturers offer a 7 year warranty against rust, not 20 years.

Im the 2nd owner..do i ride sandy beaches?no.does it go offroad?no.Is there a need to rinse under neath of a truck if it never sees anything besides pavement?no.What do you have to say about my 99 sierra's brake lines rusting out?im the only owner on that and its never seen any salt or offroad.I understand that its recalled.Acutally gm refused to fix my brake lines on my 99 even though it was recalled.Doesn't matter offroad or not if you truck sits out side throughout the seasons after years they will rott out.Any truck not just gm.Its a very simple fix though costed me 15 bucks in parts then about 10 mins hooking everything up.

When were they recalled for rusting brake lines? Every North American manufacturer has used plain, uncoated lines for fuel and brake since the first car was made. I have replaced brake lines on VWs that were coated from the factory, they still rust out. Putting a rubber sleeve on the line will actually hold the water, and make it rust faster. Rust is just a fact of life, the day you can stop it is the day you become a multimillionaire.

On my 99 sierra they were recalled in 2003 or 06 i cant remember but if look up the recalls for a 1999gmc sierra sle you'll see it.my truck was only 7 years old when they rotted out and they still refused to help me in any way.Nah i didnt put a rubber section over anything i ran a brand new brake line with insulated clamps.

It is all on the bean counters. The problem would be solved if they just used stainless steel lines instead. Never rust and last a life time. But like I said it is all about the $$$$.

The coated lines rust too. It just starts between the line and the coating.
