I am about to reach 30,000 miles on my truck. When I went to get an oil change I was recommended to do a 30,000 mile tune up for about $420.00.What would you guys recommend that actually needs to be done or is the shop right?

A "30,000 mile tune up" should consist of...An oil change.

I would look into changing front diff, rear diff and transfer case fluids. Inspect the tranny fluid. Unless you do a lot of towing it should be ok. Just my .02.

Oh I hope you don't fall for thier "semi-annual inspection" they say needs to be done at every 2nd oil change also.

Diff and t-case oils exchanged, trans fluid flush, if it has an Allison then it gets a new external trans filter(if needed), D-Max's get a new fuel filter (if needed), both gas/diesel engines get a new air filter (if needed), tire rotation and oil change (if needed), brake inspection with a clean/lube of caliper pins and brake pad contact points, wheel alignment check and general walk around inspection for lights/wipers/belts/hoses/etc.

 

If it was mine, that's what would be done. To each their own though. I just pulled my transmission down, after 195,000 miles, due to a torque convertor that was lightly howling when cold, and found the inside of the transmission

to look like the inside of a 30,000 mile transmission. Factory original engine, transfer case and diffs also. Just sayin.

Luckily I never have but this is my first vehicle to reach the 30,000 miles and that I plan on keeping. I just wanted to make sure that there was nothing to worry about.

this + maybe a tire rotation if needed... won't hurt to look at all other fluid levels, but nothing else needs to be changed

Go read your owners manual, there are recommended services every 25,000 miles. It tells you exactly what needs to be done.
