G8 Gt? Info Please

Deconstruction

I am getting the itch for a new vehicle and have been thinking on and off about a G8 GT, I love the look of them and I already know that I like the L76 power.

I was just wondering if anyone on here owns one or has spent some time in the drivers or even passengers seat of them. Are they a comfortable vehicle I am 6 feet tall and I am very long bodied my head is about an inch away from the roof in my truck with the seat set as low as possible (I sit with the seatback fairly upright). My Girlfriend has a G5 right now and I have to recline the seat back further than I find comfortable just so that I dont have to tilt my head or compress my spine from my head hitting the roof.

Has anyone driven one in the winter? are they uncontrolable it will definately get studded tires and be a secondary vehicle

are the interiors well built and rattle free? The closest one to me is 4 hours away so its not like I can swing by and testdrive easily so I wanted to get some feedback prior to driving down to take a test drive.

Thanks for your replies

I'm 5'11" tall, and I fit in them just fine. Interior is...Okay. I like the interior in my GTO better, but that's a preference thing. Quite a few people like the G8 more.

They ride VERY nicely, they're pretty fast (the GT and GXP versions do anyway), and they're pretty slick looking rides.

I test drove one before I got my truck. I too have a very long torso even for someone as tall as I am(6' 2"). I could have dealt with having more interior room, but it wasn't really cramped for a sporty car and my head didn't hit the roof with how I was seated. The interior wasn't great, but okay and it was by far the fastest car I test drove(second was the 5.3 powered SS Monte Carlo).

There is no comparison between a G5 and a G8! I have an 09 and you will not find a car with as much room in the back and front as one. As far as mileage, on the interstate at about 78 i can get 25. City, it depends but can see the average into the 17s pretty easy....if you can keep your foot out of it. I love mine and its completely stock. I haven't found anything else id consider replacing it with. Dive one, you will see the difference!

there is a v6 g8 here locally where I bought my truck if my salesman is still there I might go test drive it just to get a feel for the interior. In the last 6 years or so I have driven nothing really but jeeps and trucks I really dont like it when my head hits the roof.

Wingnut I would look into a GTO but we never got them in Canada.

The price on the G8GT's are really low compared to what I thought they would be with the G5 being paid off and the price of the 8 I dont think it is going to take much convincing to get the GF to agree that we should buy a new car (everytime she sees the G8 she always comments on how nice they are)

This is great I might have 2 L76 powered vehicles in the near future.

Ugh, a v6 G8.... useless.

My parents have a stryker blue G8 GT with the 6.0L and 18" wheel package. I think Pontiac would still be around if GM had let them sell more cars like the G8. It has a good ride and plenty of power, while stilling getting decent MPG's.

Nah they are way better off with that crappy new Buick Regal...... :wtf: /sarcasm

(I am totally with ya on the PONTIAC!)

We wont be buying one unless its the GT she wants Leather and the V8. She likes taking my truck and I hate taking her G5 so this might be a nice compromise...... yes compromise :wtf:

I am sort of concerned about having one for winter driving, I guess I will have to look into some studded tires and her using the truck more often

Well from a truck to the G8 you will feel like you are sitting on the ground but it doesn't take long to get used to.

I have one. :D

For the price, it's really a pretty good value. It rides really nicely, and has potential to be pretty quick. Mine just has a cold air intake and a tune and ran 13.20@107. A pair of headers is waiting in the garage to be installed this spring.

I'm not a very big guy (5'10 200lbs), but going from the truck to the G8 makes the G8 seem small. It's plenty big for me, and like others have mentioned, the back is big enough for adults to ride in. Mine doesn't normally get driven in the winter, but many other G8 guys drive year round. Snow tires obviously do help...but if you get one with Bridgestone Potenzas, beware of any snow. Those tires are really nice when it's warm out, but get hard when they're cold and don't stick very well.

Overall, the car is great, though. It's a nice car that can be driven everyday, rides nice and can be made pretty quick. It's also semi-rare and not many others are out on the road...especially GXPs.

Good luck with the decision!

We went today to sit in a v6 model I found it comfortable so basically it just comes down to if they can find one that is in the correct mileage range and somewhat close to our location.

I will be purchasing a set of winter tires for it the day I get it.

Cooldude47 wow if I get a black G8 we will almost have vehicle twins

I had BigRed for a little over a year, and would still have it if the crappy dealership had been able to find the water leak (5 trips to them). Check the driver's side rear seat footwell for moisture that can come from the A/C system in the console or clogged sunroof drains or, as in my case, driver's door weatherstripping. Other than that, it was a really great ride, and lots of fun to modify. Try one; you'll like it.

    • This is a really late reply but I just found this thread. They won't sell the hinges. I've gone 7 rounds with them. Their solution is to buy a new cover. I'm about to buy a new cover and it won't be a Bakflip. It also won't be from realtruck.com.
    • Yes, and also pulling heavy trailers or a large camper up steep grades as well as descending grades such as the more rustic off road camping locations and using engine braking with that low gearing as well as soft ground can just suck the power . I realize pickups these days tend to have an over all lower first gear ratio compared to automatic transmission pickups from years back so that has helped a lot in its ability in high range but there comes a point if in four wheel drive the torque runs out at the wheels, certainly with a gas engine. They don't put two speed transfer cases on pickups for a cool factor, they have a function if one needs that massive torque to the wheels that high range can't deliver.
    • Notes 7/18/2026   3,400 miles on this batch of Mobil 1 Euro 5W40 since the GDI pump replacement. Alcohol runs very clean when ring seal is tight and the sump isn't getting hosed with fuel. Checked oil level at fill up today as is my practice and grabbed a white Kleenex to look at the color. What color?  I was going to change it but.....
    • 4 low is really nice on steep boat ramps.
    • Interesting, I suspect I would have fueled up in Lee Vining as the day prior I would have filled up either in Laughlin or near there and maybe again before I entered Death Valley and once out the other side late that evening as I kept on driving into the night up near Lee Vining. Next morning I most likely fueled up in LV before heading over Tioga Pass into ( as I refer to it as "Yose .... Mite" 😁 ). And again that was 19 years ago but the price then must not have jumped out at me like the 5 bill a gallon theme of nutty cult hippy country Big Sir or head so far up their rear Aspen. I'd be curious to know where the highest prices are in the lower 48, I probably would not be far off to guess somewhere in Cali forn ie. Coldfoot and Prudhoe bay may have those prices beat but that is a whole other world up there and when prices are more normal elsewhere that is about what they can be up there I believe in no mans land. Anyway interesting that the 395 corridor is hosing people and the thing is, its tourist season and its not like there are a lot of competition options when driving up that highway from what I could see. Yup, big ole Boaterhomes and various other RV's ahead and behind me at the Yosemite entrance gate and they have to get their fuel somewhere.
