ok , i did a search for this and could not find an answer ,

i have to order a new 2011 2500hd for my work truck and there is two rear end choices

4:10 or 3:73 ...

they list the fiinal drive as 3:73 nomatter what rear end you pick ???

i do alot of towing and i also run a snow plow . so i was going to pick the 4:10

dose anybody out there run with a 4:10 package , and if so what are your thoughts on it , would you do it again ????

i am going to use the 6.0 gas , and im not to worried about fuel, the company pays for that !!

thank you

Hi and welcome to the boards! I don't understand the statement about final drive being 3.73s no matter what rear end you pick. Do they change the trans depending on rear gear ratios? The final drive usually depends what the overdrive ratio is but most people refer to it as the axle gear ratio.

The answer for what to choose if you get a choice depends on what engine you're getting and how heavy a load you really tow. If you're getting a diesel, the 3.73s may tow as well as the 4.10s with a gas engine because of the greater torque of the diesel. The 3.73s may get you a bit better mileage with either engine because they will lower the engine RPMs at highway speeds.

sorry not used to this posting thing ..

my tow load is about 8,000 lbs and i pull it all the time , and the company i work for has told me it has to be A gas truck..

when you go to gmc truck.com and look at the spec sheets the 3:73 can pull 9,000 and the 4:10 can pull 13,000 .. but the final drive is listed as 3:73 i dont get it eather ..

With the gas engine, I'd probably go with 4.10s. Especially a 8000# load. Does the company buy your gas, too? If they do, then heck yeah, I'd go with the 4.10s! I'll have to go to the GMC truck site and see about that gearing, doesn't sound right.

Looks like you can't get the 4.10s with the diesel, only the gas engine.

select the 4.10, it will show final drive as 3.73 but the RPO for 4.10 will over ride the standard. Same with the mirrors. If you select the towing mirrors, it shows the standard mirrors in the configuration and further down where the options are, it shows the towing mirrors.

There is a note somewhere that says the optional items replace the standard ones.

4.10s FTW. In the 800 series, the 4.10 rear ends were the only option for an HD gas truck. That was a really good combination with the 4L80E. Im sure with the 6L80E, they would be even better since you stay higher in the tq curve with the closer gearing of the trans.

I had a LD 2500 that was exactly the same as my dads 2500HD, except he had 4.10s and I had 3.73s. The only difference in performance was that he could tow more weight and could leave my truck pulling uphill. Unloaded he got 13mpg and I got 14mpg, so fuel savings with the 3.73 over the 4.10 isnt going to be much. The 6.0L drinks gas no matter what gears you have. Any RPM over 2K keeps you in the low teens or lower for fuel mileage. But, if you arent paying for fuel, who cares.

I run 4.10s in my 5.3L Tahoe, I really like them when towing or driving in the Mountains. When I run accross Nevada and everyone else is running 85mph my 4.10's are not happy so I have to keep the speed down.

Up to 75mph they work great.

Go with the 4.10's. The 6.0/HD is a gas hog in any configuration, so it really doesn't matter. 4.10's will be much stronger.

if hes buying a 6 litre gasser i dont think hes concerned with fuel mileage  ...and ya go with 4:10's dude. thank us later LOL

Got the 4.10 on my 6.0L. Think it was a good choice. I didn't notice any gas mileage difference from my previous 3.73. But noticed a difference on pulling uphills.

4.10s all the way. less of an rpm drop between gears when pulling. and the gas mileage differance is minimal.
