UPS is such a rip-off for us Northern folks.

I want to order a Banks exhaust for my truck, but I think I'll have it shipped and drive across the border and pick it up myself. Fuel would be cheaper than UPS charges.

Unless you can pay UPS charges upfront it is ridiculous, I find the USPS priority is actually quick these days, under a week sometimes and I am out in Nova Scotia.

I hate when you don't have a choice...I would have chosen USPS in a heart beat.

You have a choice... don't do business with companies that will only ship UPS. Once they tried to charge me more in brokerage fees than I paid for a item. I will never do business with them again. Ever

But if you have to use them, look up self declaring your item. It will save you tons. You get the paperwork on the package from UPS, go to your local customs office, usually at your airport. Present a invoice for what you paid for it, pay your gst. Then go back to UPS with the paperwork from the customs office saying you paid tax and get your item.

Can you do that after it has been shipped...I haven't paid the fees I was out when the item showed up.

Yeah, I don't normally deal with UPS, but thats how HP tuners ships its stuff...so I was kinda boned...

Not if UPS has already cleared the item. The only time I have been given the option to clear a package myself was using UPS freight. I have had friends who have tried it with no luck, the procedure seems to be as soon as you get the tracking number call them and tell them you plan to self clear. Then you have to get the paper work and go to your local customs office, pay the fees and then return that paper work to UPS. However I know of a few people that were told they had to be at the entry port in person to pay not an office, which is false. The best way to do this is to have your items shipped to a business, if it is a business shipment UPS isnt automatically granted power of attorney like with a personal shipment so they have to call/email you and ask how you plan to have custom paid for, either they clear, another clearing agency or self clear.

Well that sucks the big one...

I guess I'm screwed...I mean its not that big a deal really...but I think 25% is a little excessive. Especially as taxes here are 12%...I could see a 5% surcharge for doing the paper work. I mean I already paid shipping of 55 bucks for a little box. I just shipped the same size package to Texas for 35 bucks and I paid extra insurance on it...and it got there faster.

I know for a fact you can refuse a UPS shipment at your door and then go self declare it. Atleast here in Winnipeg they let you

here in B.C you can also, just have to want for when the item goes into exception call them up and tell them you wana self declare it

im 10 mins from the border so have a usa shipping address now, no fee's now lol

This is probably the best bet for most of you guys. Getting a mail box (not a PO BOX), and having the packages sent there (in the US). That will only work if you live close enough to the border. I use to sell automotive parts online, and I stopped doing it because of all the hefty shipping costs and extra fees like this. Too much BS

You can clear your package through customs yourself or have it it shipped at a parcel service and drive across the border to pick it up. I've done both. I usually just drive the hour down south across the border to pick it up. I will NEVER EVER EVER EVER EVER have anything shipped via UPS again!

Another option is to have it shipped to a friends place in the US and them have him mail it to you. I've done this many times to get free shipping and beat the brokerage nightmare. I then just send him a money order or buy him a case of beer next time I go visiting.

    • It is a company truck. Not under warranty. Both companies I’m involved with usually buy trucks that are discounted when looking. Except what the owners drive. Being retired and minority owner. I don’t drive a company truck. If they have the new GM gas engine it would be in a service truck.
    • Update!   Had the dealer look at the issue. First tech says no problem?? I said there was no voltage on the brake terminal on the 7 pin connector! He said he did not know what pin I was talking about. So they bring out a seasoned tech and I explain to him. He attaches a VOM and has me push the brake, and sees no voltage!!    Tom, the seasoned guy says lets go back to my service bay and look closer. We discover thru his on line system that the controller is a "smart controller" as it needs to detect a trailer connected before the brake voltage is allowed to the 7 pin connector!!! He also showed me a GM bulletin stating some trailers with LED lights have such low resistance the controller wont recognize them!!! I was thinking WTF, but thanked him for bringing me back into the service bay and explaining this all to me. He also plugged in a trailer simulator and it showed the brake controller was indeed working.   After my dealership visit I hooked up to an older camper with standard 1157 lights and the truck did connect and the electric brakes worked great!    Not to sure what I have to do with the equipment trailer with LED lights, I cant tow it with no brakes.   Why did something so simple for many years have to get so complicated!
    • Do find out as that would be interesting if they have been using any L8T engines or for that matter have been running any of the Ford gas 7.3 to see how they have been panning out.    I assume your nephews engine replacement was on his dime as the regular warranty would have long past unless he had some form of extended warranty that covered such events. That shows though and may depend on the year of the build that failures are occurring with the valve train well beyond the warranty distance and more than likely so will others have that sneak up on them.
    • I realize this is an old post and its probably been talked about since then on this forum and I may have mentioned it myself but the Chev multi flex tailgate on the HD trucks are all aluminum so there is that one item that I am aware of on a current GM HD truck that is aluminum but if its the standard tailgate then its still a steel unit as far as I am aware to current 2026 model year.
    • I am surprised it didn't pop back up some just in time for the end of school/summer holidays and July 4th time period. Here in Alberta it hit its low coming off the high back a week before the end of June or so and has been creeping back up some and would equate roughly to around 20 cents per gallon increase. Of course there are various factors and one is the games they typically play with wanting to capture that holiday vehicle movement but also our government directly causing our Canadian dollar to drop ( a polite way of explaining the real picture ) causing our prices to go up rather than continue down like it should have, and even though we are sitting on the crude.
