Rear end noise

I just purchased a 1999 Sierra 4WD xtra cab and I noticed that when I stop and then start I hear a noise in the rear end of the vehicle, if I slow down gradually and start gradually after a complete stop the noise isn't there leading me to belive it has nothing to do with the rear dif.  Could it be the spare tire shifting?

Hi. I would check the universal joints first. Try holding the brakes on and torquing the rear end by applying the gas with it in drive slowly. If the universals are bad you should hear a slight noise as it torques up. This is for a quite worn universal joint.  SAFTEY NOTE: MAKE SURE NOBODY IS IN THE FRONT OF THE TRUCK!! :thumb:

May wish to search for "driveline clunk" on here.  This is a noted problem with these trucks.  There's a certain amount of play in the driveshaft, and what you're hearing is it sliding.  They now make a nickel plated slip yoke which is supposed to cure the problem.  Another solution is the new blue transfer case fluid.  Plenty of info here on both.
