Tow Haul vs 3rd Gear

I understand the tow haul button will stop up and down search shifting and give firmer shifts... otherwise the firmer shifts, is selecting 3rd a bad idea?

 

On my 1997, my transmission shop told me to always select 3rd when towing and no OD to prevent lockup and heat build up. So, I was seeking info on selection options.

I drive in 3rd around the city.  I cant stand the OD kicking in and out.  No ill effects

 

Much less clunking also which is a plus.
