Filling Up With Gas

I don't drive my 09 Siverado much except in the winter time, most of the time I ride my motorcycle.

 

What I have noticed is when I put gas in it, I put the nozzle in and set the pump trigger catch and let go of the nozzle.

 

What happens is the the automatic shut off will activate and I have to keep re-setting it.

 

I did notice that if after setting the nozzle, if I hold the nozzle up all the time instead of letting it rest, it will not shut off.

 

This doesn't seem right to me. I shouldn't have to hold the nozzle up all the time while getting gas to keep the pump going?

 

Anyone else have this problem?

 

Any ideas what could cause this?

I think it is because of the damn E-85 nozzle.. the E-85 nozzles are slightly larger, so the hole in our fillers is slightly larger to accept the E-85 nozzle, where a non Flex Fuel vehicle "shouldn't" be able to put the E-85 Nozzle in.

 

 

what I do is to wedge the gas cap under the handle of the nozzle and hook it inside the fill area (as not to scratch my paint) to give it a slight lift and then it fills without issue.. There is a lot of play in the normal gas nozzles, because of the larger fill hole, when I have used the E-85 nozzle it has zero play and sits in correctly..

They have a different fix for that in Canada, we don't get the option of a trigger lock on the self serve pumps, we have to stand there and hold it.

I have the same problem. You just have to find the sweet spot, then it will work.

I've never had that problem as I have held the nozzle when putting gas in the tank for 51 years. You know nothing bad has happened to me in all that time.

 

If you lived in New Jersey or Oregon you wouldn't have that problem either, Its illegal to pump your own gas in those states...

you have a 2005, is yours capable of FlexFuel (E-85) (I don't know so I'm asking)

 

I have never had the issue in any other vehicle, but no other vehicle I have owned or currently own is a Flex Fuel.

Does it also depend on the station you are at, or do you always use the same station?

No, mine is not flex fuel. What I am saying, since I started driving in 1960, I have never put the nozzle in auto mode. I have seen too many bad things happen over the years with people who left the nozzle on auto and left the vehicle to do other things. Holding the nozzle in the filler neck has never inconvenienced me what so ever.

Same thing happens to me! It freakin' drives me nuts!

 

I was beginning to think it had something to do with the big black hose that CA mandates covers the nozzle to recover fumes. But, if it's happing to you guys in other places who don't have that stupid thing, then I'm at a loss...

Yes, Us Canadians are completely incompetent and might hurt ourselves or blow up the gas station so we don't have that option anymore

That said, the Diesel pump in my town somehow got under the radar and has a trigger lock.

 

Come to think of it, I might start keeping a pair of Vice Grips under the seat of my truck, that should fix the problem of no trigger lock on gas pumps....

Most of the time I use the same station, (Costco) since it is usually the lowest price, plus we get 4% cash back at the end of the year.

 

I am taking the truck in for a service this Friday, I will ask them about it also. Maybe someone might have heard of it before.

I had the same problem with my 09. I don't have it with my 2011. I have gone to the same place I used to have the problem and it doesn't happen. They may have fixed the problem.

Haven't had that problem on mine. I use a couple of different stations and it always works fine.

I've never had that happen, not once, gas or E85.
