Battery Leaking

My best friend bought his 2000 GMC SLE extended cab about 6 mos before me.  I liked his so much I got mine.

 

My battery went bad (actually it worked fine but it leaked acid all over the place).  It was replaced under warranty.

 

My buddy's truck...same thing.

 

Is this a fluke?  Or is there a problem with the Delco battery?

 

BTW:  So far we have both had the same warranty probs...the steering gear whistle and the plastic liner inside the door problem.

 

Still love the trucks though.  Kicks the "truckville" outta that Dodge I got rid of!

My original battery just started leaking this spring . I finally replaced it when it would not keep a charge anymore .

It was leaking from the top (kinda where the seam is between the top and the sides ) not from the connections .

Replaced it with an exide 78dt and it seems a lot stronger now

I had a dead short in my wifes old car.  It was a 2000 Olds Silhouette.  I don't know if the battery was leaking though because it was packed in there pretty tight.  I think there was about 10K on it when it died...

My mom had a bad cell in her battery in her 2000 blazer.  Twice it didnt want to start took it in and they checked it out and replaced under warranty

I've had atleast 3 delco batteries leak and every one of the leaked from the terminal. And I believe it was the positive post.

my 94 1500 had a delco in it and did the exact same thing, leaked from the screw term... but before I noticed, the acid, leaked down the pos. cable and weakend the fused joint 1/2 way down the cable, in trafic one day 1/2 way into the intersection, everything died!  the cable came appart! ever try to push your fullsize by yourself in the middle of an intersection?

I have to agree that the Delco batteries are junk. I noticed mine was starting to leak a little from the top the other day and starting to corrode the terminals. :angry:

I honestly believe its a defect. I have been using Duralast Batteries as replacement. No leaks, No corrosion. I have seen more than mine leaking from the post. A lady I work with had one on a 2 year old saturn with 30K on it and it leaked just enough to mess with the connection. Lights would come on, but wouldn't spin the starter.

I have not had a problem to date but I think I will go take a look at it tomorrow.

I'll have to say I've never seen a Delco battery leak, between the GM's I've had, plus my family's.

 

It seems most say they leak near the terminals.  Could it be from tightening the cables too tight and cracking the casing?  ???

If so, it was done at the factory on mine.

I had the OEM battery replaced early this summer in my '99 Silverado.  Wouldn't start one morning and would not charge, sothe dealer picked it up on a flatbed and replaced the battery under warranty.  There was just a bit of leakage and I cleaned that up.  

 

Leaking batteries are a problem in late model Corvettes, too.  The big problem there is that the battery sits directly over the ECM!!

 

I still have the OEM Delco battery in my '92 Corvette so go figure!

We have had to replace 2 batteries out of the 3 GMC Sierras we have. A 99 and a 2001. They both leaked from the terminals right around 30K miles.
