Couple Question Bout My Truck

Recommended Posts

Ok so I got a 1998 Chevy Silverado. My friend just bought a CarMD so i decided to plug it into my truck for fun. It came up with the Codes P0420 and P0430. Which means: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1) and Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2). What does that mean and how do I fix that?

Also Im trying to figure out what generation engine I have in my truck. Its the 5.7L 350 but I cant find anywhere which generation that is. Im trying to figure this out because I want to buy a engine from a salvage yard, rebuild it and put it into my truck. This is the book im looking at: http://www.amazon.com/How-Rebuild-LS-Engin...n/dp/193249460X

Also, do I have to find a 350 engine from the exact year truck I have or can it be from any Third Generation Chevy or GMC truck?

Also, do you know if there are any performance rebuild kits for that engine?

Thanks,

Max

That book won't help any, it's for the newer engines in the 99+ trucks. As for the codes, it could be bad O2 sensors or maybe bad cats, among other things.

Somebody please correct me if I am wrong; I am far from a mechanic. Both codes indicate a problem with the cats, or possibly faulty O2 sensors ( I would assume 2 per cat).

Cheers, Brendan

Oh yeah, congratulations on your new truck

your 98 is a Gen 1e. Basically an original small block Chev with roller cam, central port EFI, and Vortec heads.

P0420 GM

Catalyst system low efficiency

– The ECM determines that the catalyst efficiency has degraded below a calibrated threshold for more than 4 seconds

Probable Cause

1. Open or short circuit condition

2. Poor electrical connection

3. Inspect exhaust system for leaks ,

4. Catalytic converter

P0430 Generic Definition

Catalyst efficiency low-bank 2

– The oxygen sensors monitor the Catalytic Converters ability to store oxygen.

Probable Cause

1. Catalytic Converter defective ( Failure possibly due to # 2,3, or 4)

2. Engine misfire or running condition

3. large vacuum leak

4. Engine oil leakage into exhaust-valve guide seals, piston rings
