Ezdown Tailgate Assist

Really want to get one for my 2011. I see it is a straight forward bolt replacement on the truck portion, but does the installation require any drilling on the tailgate bracket? Do you have pics of that side? Does yours slow the tailgate all the way down or only at the end? Tks.

The kit does not require any drilling. You might have a problem with the supplied washer being too big/wide. I replaced mine with a smaller diameter washer. The tailgate starts to slow down almost immediately once you open it.

As others have said, no drilling at all. There is one special "nut" that gets installed, but that uses a bolt, a nut, and torrington type bearing to install the nut. That nut goes into a pre-existing hole in the tailgate.

In my case, once I got the correct damper, it slowed the gate down right from the point it was opened. Unlock the gate, pull it open an inch or so, and let it go. It gets slowed down right from the start, and then all the way to the end. No need to even put your hand on the gate to assist in any way, just let it go.

Got one, installed it on my truck. As everyone said, it was a breeze, 15min max and no drilling. I would like the tailgate to go down a bit slower though if possible. Has anyone ever installed 2 of them, one on each side of the tailgate? Or would I be better to look for a stronger cylinder?

Picked one up today and installed ........ it has a nice cool factor, mainly for the wife gate seems a little heavy for her if she ever opens it. Says she is scared she will let it slip and slam down, then fears the evil eye from me lol.

Just installed one of these on my 2012 Sierra, direct bolt-on, plug and play. Very easy, five minute install.

Great mod and something GM should consider as a future option on all trucks.

How easy is it to disconnect in the case when you want to remove the tailgate? Do you need to carry a wrench/ratchet to do so?

It's not any harder to disconnect than it would be just taking the factory cables off.

there's a rubber stopper connected to the top of the shock. remove that, lift the tailgate up slightly to relieve the weight on the shock and it slips right off. no tools needed

Bought and installed the EZ Down kit this morning, and it couldn't be easier....I love it. My dad came up to hang out today and we researched one for his truck b/c he now wants one too! It truly is 100% bolt on. Pretty impressive improvement for $30

Yes, it does appear the price went up since this topic started, as $30 was what I saw on the O'Reilly site yesterday. Still, I'm in for one later today, as the wife and kids use the truck, and are none too particular about how they carelessly abuse the tailgate, let alone come up with lame excuses as to why they did so. Rant off; cure on the way.

Just picked up the last one from my local O'Reilly's . Lucky me. Install took about 10 mins and was a breeze. Bolted right up with no modification needed. Works great. Nice upgrade.
