Due to a thread on another forum, I have decided that I want to change my Mobil 1 Full Synthetic oil every 6,000 miles and change my oil filter out every 3,000 miles. If the oil still has plenty of life left, I don't think it makes much sense to throw it out and buy more. I'll buy a quart to put more in to replace what gets tossed out in the filter, of course.

My question is: can the oil filter be changed without draining or leaking a lot of oil?

um, why change the filter every 3K? just get filter that is good for 6K and change it with the oil..

there are plenty of longer life filters out there, Mobil-1, Amsoil, Rotunda, Royal Purple.. most of those are rated 7,000 - 10,000..

changing your filter or oil, even on dino every 3,000 is nothing more than the oil change companies sucking your wallet dry..

yeah your filter could easily go to 6,000 or more. No sense in wasting money.

You can change out the oil filter and you will only loose about 1/2 a qt or so. Also to keep from getting all messy, use a freezer style ziplock bag, place it over the filter before it starts to leak and then take it off. The ziplock catches the oil and keeps it from going down your arm.
