Protection For That Plastic Tailgate Cap

Recommended Posts

i got off work early and was pretty bored sitting at home alone... but then i thought, "i wish that plastic tailgate cap had bedliner on it like the rest of the bed to cover up and prevent scratches!"

well last weekend i remember seeing a commercial for that Duplicolor Bed Armor Spray. and i went to the store looking for some. didn't find any, but i did find a can of Rubberized Undercoating. i figured, what the heck that cap is only about $50 to replace if i royally screw it up.

i used an entire can of DupliColor Rubberized Undercoating = $5

i put about 3 coats on, the first 2 coats were light coats, the last one was a thick coat (moved can at a slower speed). if you attempt to do this, be sure to keep the speed, angle/orientation of the can, and distance from the part constant! any change and it will look un-even. its just like normal spray painting!

well here are some pics of it drying on my porch, it looks pretty close to the spray in bedliner i already have:

i'll post pics of it installed once it is dried.

Interesting, Looks good!

Mine is pretty beat up and have a brand new one in the package still. Maybe I will play around with the beat up one. The bed armor stuff is some good stuff. Used it on my hitch basket.

i put it on the truck to let it dry over night. the color is more flat than glossy like it was when wet. the bumps smoothed out a little, but still looks good.

i think the spray can bed armor stuff would have been a better choice, but didn't find any in stock locally and didn't feel like ordering it. but overall i'm satisfied. its rubbery feeling and has some cushion and skid resistance to it.

here is what it looks like dried and installed:

Looks good! I took the tailgate cap off mine and threw it in the trash before I had the bed sprayed. Did the over the rail and covered where the tailgate cap was with bedliner.

must be nice... when i took the cap off, there was some big giant gaping holes across the handle side of the tailgate, hidden by the cap.

alright, so it didn't hold up as well as i thought it initially would. looks like a bird walked on it yesterday, left a couple of gouges from it's feet in the undercoating.

i guess it's time to order a new one and have my buddy spray it with bedliner stuff!
