Can I wire my foglights so that

Recommended Posts

Hey all,

Just wondering if there's a relatively easy way to wire my fog lights so that when the headlights kick on the fogs come on automatically, too.

I have an 02 Z71 Tahoe with the factory round fogs (and a button that needs to be pressed each time you want the fogs on).  I'm wondering if I can wire things so that I DON'T have to depress that button (but so that depressing the button turns OFF the fogs) -- I want them to come on when the light sensors kick the headlights on automatically.

Can this be done?  Thanks!

I don't know if there is a way to do it in a "home-made" kind of way, but R&D Truck and Auto Accessories sells a kit that will make them come on automaticaly.  I have had the kit almost 2 years, and it's worked fine.  It only cost $15.00 + S&H.

Here's a couple pics of where it's installed.  Only a few wires to connect.  R&D Foglight Controller

I have a few more of their products and all of them have worked really well.  All include very good instructions with a few pictures to help out.

YES, there is an easy way!!!   You will have to cut the wires going to the fog lamps so that it is completely disconnected from the trucks computer system.   Next, splice into your "hot" wire on your parking lights (not the turn signal or they will flash with the turn signals) and run it to a relay.   When ever you turn on your parking lights (headlights too) it will activate the relay to turn on the fog lights.   They even stay on when you put on your Hi-Beams also. :D

Thanks for the replies, folks!

Now, Tom and Bandera -- Will the bought and the home-made splice job methods do the same thing?  And Tom, with the product you've cited here, will I be able to DISABLE and RE-ENABLE the fogs with a press of the factory fog button -- and will the fog "on" light by the button still function properly?

Thanks you!!!  Great to know this can be done easily!

I don't know abot the home-made version.  But the one you buy is works great.  The switch on the dash is still useable, its just that the fog lights will be on all the time and if you want them off you have to push the button. :D:D

Perfect!  At $15, I'm going for it.

Thanks again, folks!

PS -- One more thing... Will the fogs be on all the time with the daytime running lamps, or just when the sensor kicks on the actual headlights?

I would hope they wouldn't be on with the DRL since they are part of the headlamp system wiring. So once the answer comes in for that question, I'm in too! Oh, to Kirk's question, when the fogs come on with the headlamps, will the indicator light for the fogs be lit?

thanks

No they don't come on with the DRL's unless you turn your parking light's or headlight's are on. Which make the truck look cool also.  And yes the little light next to the button for the fog's will be illuminated when the fog's are on.   :D Check out some of the other things on that sight they have the headlight module that will make the dim's come on with the hi's intead of the dim's shutting off when the hi's are on.  Makes for brighter brights.  :D

Silverado Man, don't the DRL go off when the headlamps or parking lights are on? I've never noticed, so not sure. But the foglight kit sounds like a slam dunk.

Actually, a follow-up question. How difficult is it to get the trim plate off? I assume the lower cover is secured with screws. I don't want to force anything and break it.

thanks again!

And another follow-up, with a different slant...anyone know how difficult it is to install R&D's Auto Headlamp Override module? I'm going to order the foglight and headlamp controller for sure.

Thanks

1. If it is day light the DRL's are on even if you manually turn the lights on.  But a night the DRL's are not on.  Makes for a nice look.

2. It is screw in at the bottom and snapped at the top.  If you have the center console that extends to the dash be careful because it is a tight fight with that piece of dash.

3.  Don't know much about this but look at Tom's site he has some good info for R&D kit installs. Click Here

I hope you understand most of what I'm saying.  Happy Modding. :D  :D

Tom or SilveradoMan,

Is there a way, with the headlight control module, to have the fogs stay on too? I noticed that even though the Highs and Lows will be on, the fogs do still go out...If you have this kit and the fog kit installed, is this the case? Just putting my wish list together.

thanks again!
